Is it over the traces of ruins at Shatb, then Mirjam—

effaced, which did not speak when asked to speak—

that you stem springs from your eye, whose harnessed

water-drawing camels then rushed forth at Aslum?

So, for Khusayla's two age-mates, his heart

feels a resurgence of longing that has not ended.

Like a lame beast: if gently handled, it

stirs to move; if harshly driven, it makes for its goal.

And why recall Khusayla's two age-mates after

they departed through the midst of al-Marad, then Taghlam?

By morning they were at al-La'ba, flinging pebbles

out to their far side and toward the hunter.

Keeping abreast of al-Mudayyah's hills, they avoided

the mountains of al-Hima and al-Akhshabayn by Akhrum.

Toward you they race, after I said, ‘There have appeared

the mountains of al-Shaba’—or they had skirted Tarim's hills.

With us, the pale camels cross the wilderness, as though they were

al-Kudr's sandgrouse, nearing Damdam's waterhole at evening.

High in Dhu Jarawil, late at night, cry out

their footpads, staining the flint with blood.

My companions hitch the thoroughbred Himyarite camels

to a pale camel, ever rising despite weariness, flinging stones.

As though the mounts, from Zubana, kept clear

of the shoulders of a compact, rounded crag of Nadad.

They vie in height—having been steered past Abid's peaks—

with al-Muqattam's hills, along their left flanks.

You see the aligned row of their necks, as though it were

joints of straightened Samhari spears pointing toward you.

When they tug at the slack reins, there sway

great green-glazed jars, rocked by their upper neck-joints.

They visit a man who, as for God, fears Him,

and, in the deeds of the righteous, follows their example.

We renew for you our bejeweled words, and ride

toward you the daughters of al-Say'ari and Shadqam.

To you—for the Nile, setting forth at morning,

with rippled waves overtopping villages, mounting high,

in flood, overturning ships around its banks,

onto their chins, its coiling surge rushing forward,

is no greater in bounty than you; indeed, not all of it

equals even part of the gifts of your shared-out bounty.

I have seen Ibn Layla, the core of whose wealth is beset

by diverse requests, from rich and penniless alike.

Requests: if he has what is sought, it is freely given

by his hands; and if wronged over them, he protests.

Your hands are springtime, whose abundant bounty is sought,

and your face reveals goodness to the discerning.

Indeed, events have revealed in you to your enemies,

against their will, the gleaming edge of a keen, cleaving sword.

And many a helmeted man's breast you once transfixed

with a sharp point on the fore-shaft of a keen spear.

And from many a debtor's complexion you dispelled

the remnant of a dark cloud of grief.

And a captive—you undid his neck-shackle and his fetter,

and both had scarred his leg and wrist.

And were Mount Radwa weighed against his forbearance,

his forbearance would outweigh Radwa and Yaramram.

He is of the fair company whose faces

are polished dinars bearing Heraclius's stamp.

So you—when noble deeds are reckoned between him

and Ibn Harb, wise and majestic—

whenever I utter a praise-poem, even at the end of time,

it is only for honored Ibn Layla.
