كَمُحتَطبٍlike a wood-gatherer ماwhatever يَلقَhe finds بِالَيلِat night يَحطِبِhe gathers as firewood
I saw that al-Ḍamrī’s daughter, ʿAzza, had become
I saw the daughter of fate, proud Azah, who became
like a wood-gatherer who gathers whatever he finds at night.
Like one gathering wood who finds no wood to gather at night
وَكانَتand she used to تُمَنّيناshe held out hopes to us وَتزعُمُand she claimed أَنّهاthat she was
كَبَيضِlike the eggs of الأَنوقِthe vulture فيon الصَفاthe smooth rock المُتَنَصِّبِtowering
And she used to hold out hopes to us and claim that she was
She used to make us desire her and claim she was
like a vulture’s eggs on the towering, smooth rock.
Like the purest pearls arrayed on a high dune

Through her, one evening at Birmah, I spared myself
I turned my eyes from her one evening in Barma
the gloating of enemies, [present?] and absent.
To the gloating of enemies, absent and hidden
