عَرَفتُI recognized الدارَthe dwelling قَدalready أَقوَتhad become deserted بِريمِat Rim
عَرَفتُ الدارَ قَد أَقوَت بِريمِ
إِلىto لَأيٍLa'y فَمَدفَعِthen the valley-mouth ذيDhu (place-name element) يَدومِYadum
إِلى لَأيٍ فَمَدفَعِ ذي يَدومِ
I recognized the dwelling, already deserted, at Rim,
I knew the house had become strong with spears
stretching to La'y, then the valley-mouth of Dhu Yadum.
Of polished blades made for striking endlessly
أَميرَO Commander المُؤمِنينَof the Faithful إِلَيكَtoward you نَهويwe hasten
أَميرَ المُؤمِنينَ إِلَيكَ نَهوي
عَلىon البُختِthe Bactrian camels الصَلادِمِthe massive, sturdy ones وَالعَجومِand the hardy ones
عَلى البُختِ الصَلادِمِ وَالعَجومِ
Commander of the Faithful, toward you we hasten
To you, O Commander of the Faithful, we complain
on massive, hardy Bactrian camels.
Of the hardships of fate and the non-Arabs
كَأَنَّas though سَوالِفَthe foreparts of the necks النَجُداتِof the sturdy she-camels مِنهاamong them
كَأَنَّ سَوالِفَ النَجُداتِ مِنها
تَقَطَّرُdrip بِالأَرَندَجِwith black-dyed leather وَالعَصيمِand dye-stain
تَقَطَّرُ بِالأَرَندَجِ وَالعَصيمِ
It is as though the fore-necks of the sturdy ones among them
As if the hanging swords speak of it
were dripping with black leather and dye
Dripping with the snake’s venom and poison
إِذاwhen اِتَّخَذَتtook as وُجوهُthe faces القَومِof the men نَصباًa target directly ahead
إِذا اِتَّخَذَت وُجوهُ القَومِ نَصباً
أَجيجَthe blazing heat الواهِجاتِof the scorching gusts مَنَfrom السَمومِthe hot desert wind
أَجيجَ الواهِجاتِ مَنَ السَمومِ
when the men's faces meet head-on
When the faces of the people turn to frown
the blazing heat of the simoom's scorching gusts.
The clashing of sparkling swords with their poisons
فَكَمand how many غادَرنَthey (the she-camels) left behind دونَكَbefore reaching you مِنof جَهيضٍa miscarried foal
فَكَم غادَرنَ دونَكَ مِن جَهيضٍ
وَمِنand of نَعلٍa camel's foot-pad مُطَرَّحَةٍcast aside جَذيمِtorn off
وَمِن نَعلٍ مُطَرَّحَةٍ جَذيمِ
And how many miscarried foals they have left before reaching you,
So many deserters left you
and many a torn foot-pad, cast aside!
And many discarded sandals without straps
يَزُرنَthey (the she-camels) visit عَلىdespite تَنائيهِhis remoteness يَزيداًYazid
يَزُرنَ عَلى تَنائيهِ يَزيداً
بِأَكنافِin the environs of المُوَقَّرِal-Muwaqqar وَالرَقيمِand al-Raqim
بِأَكنافِ المُوَقَّرِ وَالرَقيمِ
They visit Yazid, though he is far away,
They visit Yazid in his authority
in the environs of al-Muwaqqar and al-Raqim.
With the honored and the despised
تُهَنِّئُهُcongratulate him الوُفودُthe delegations إِذاwhen أَتوهُthey come to him
تُهَنِّئُهُ الوُفودُ إِذا أَتوهُ
بِنَصرِon the victory of اللَهِGod وَالمُلكِand sovereignty العَظيمِmighty
بِنَصرِ اللَهِ وَالمُلكِ العَظيمِ
Delegations congratulate him when they come to him
The delegations congratulate him when they come
on God-given victory and mighty sovereignty.
