Ah, my people, help against separation and its twists,

and Asma's estrangement whenever we do not coax her!

Her manner is not truly forthcoming

toward us; yet she is not hated for her nature.

It is her turning away, for fear you may reproach her,

though no grounds for estrangement have come before her.

We remain the same toward Asma; we have not gone

to her, nor severed her old bonds of friendship.

How I yearn when I am certain she has strutted—

Asma, with a little of her proud sway, for a far-off parting!

And Asma is not disgraced by reproach

in our eyes, nor excused by her excuses.

And I, despite my sickness for Asma and what

my soul revives within me after its healing,

truly thrill to memories of Asma from days gone by,

and to Asma's encampment after her departure.

If she goes far away one day, I weep; and if she comes near,

I humble myself and deem her too great for me in her aloofness.

I resolve to shun Asma if she is brought near

by her dwelling—not from indifference to union with her.

For no beloved has kept ties with us as she has,

nor has any beloved schemed against us as she has.

Then will Asma repay—may her bough grow green,

and may the beauty that enriches her endure—

my yearning for Asma, with trackless desert between us,

and my honoring hostile folk out of reverence for her?

Will you obey me, O heart, even under compulsion,

without having reproached a soul unblamed for its devising,

so that you make Asma tomorrow like a wish

    that neared fulfillment, then disappointed, and you ceased to heed it;

and forget the bond of yearning for Asma,

and shoe her to the pattern of her own sandal?

By Asma's father's life, her pledge has not held

to her words of former days and her former ways.

Nor did she sever—unless she sought some return

in the outcome—a man's cord among her cords.

How strange, her mixing her sweet water

    with salt, and [unclear word] she has altered some of her speech;

and her divulging what was entrusted to her,

and her pledging her word, then abandoning it!

At first we used to regard her as a beloved

truthful, despite the coquetry she had been allowed.

And on a night of cold, damp wind, whose frost wetted

the pale camels' flanks beneath us, under their saddles,

I traveled by night; but for love of Asma, I would not have spent the night

with its north wind's gusts shaking my clothes.
