Ah, now that Salma has gone far away, you are love-stricken,

and no bearer has yet brought news of her this morning.

No evening passes, for as long as you live,

nor does morning come, but your passion is renewed.

Dwellings on the outskirts of al-Surayr, as though

plaster lay upon them in the environs of Ghayqah.

The years pass away, yet I do not see

their ruins fading on al-Shaba's open plain.

Then its Ghayq, then the ridges—the ridges of Zabyah—

where pale gazelles spend the day roaming for pasture.

And a dusky dove bewails her grief, as though

she had lost a loved one among the deserted ravines.

Like a Himyarite woman making merry at the height of forenoon,

striking the strings with both hands and singing.

The nights with Su'da, in the youth now gone,

and her women, white-necked and graceful,

they press musk-pods to their skin at every stirring of desire,

and fresh saffron glows upon them.

So put Salma from your mind, since distance bars the way to her,

and you are, you claim, a resolute, hardy man.

And dispel your soul's cares, for treating them—

unless a man handles them wisely—is hard.

With a pale she-camel, whose backbone and flanks

and withers rise full beneath the saddlecloth.

Her breast slopes downward as she surges forward,

and the cleft between her shoulders slopes upward.

Beneath the saddle's wooden bows is a sturdy, well-kept she-camel,

anvil-hard, with lean, long-necked camels racing beside her.

You see her, when the riders wake thirsty,

and hope to reach water, though it is far away,

strutting as a woman struts toward her sisters-in-law,

flaunting her sash-wrapped waist, swaying gracefully.

Toward you, Abu Bakr, she trots with a rider,

despite weariness, strong in both forelegs and swift of stride.

She crosses the hills of the clans—the clans of Ghalib.

I say, whenever I am asked, 'Where are you bound?'

'I seek Abu Bakr, even if between us should lie

stony tracts that kill riding-camels, and desert wastes.'

So you may know that I remain faithful to friendship,

and am not ungrateful for a gracious favor.

And you, in my eyes, in generosity and all else,

and in every circumstance, as long as you live, are praiseworthy.

There are the favors of your hand, its fingers freely open

    through your giving, while some others remain stiff;

and the favors of him from whom I am now parted

by stony ground and a dune pursued by sand-scattering winds.

May neither the bones beneath the grave-slab be forsaken—

though crumbled—nor the threadbare garments there.

For I used to see Abd al-Aziz, whose star,

whenever we met, rose bright and auspicious.

He has a gathering of his sons and their sons,

noble men, seated like the points of swords.

For no living man, however long his life,

nor the firmly rooted mountains, can endure forever.

And you are a man inspired to truthfulness and generosity,

and forefathers bequeathed you ancestral glory:

forefathers from the two Ka'bs, white of face,

theirs are remembered deeds whose glory is long inherited.
