    I visited Layla's dwellings at al-Barud.

They had grown old, and tempests swept over them.

They lay desolate after the tribe, save dwellings

that seem newly made, though they are worn-away ruins.

And whenever they stood empty and their campsite grew lush,

a camp of your friends would be there.

For the tribe has left us after a stay,

and nothing is there but the roaming winds.

As though no soul had long inhabited them, nor had there been

    anyone to dwell there since the days of al-Hidamla;

nor had there thronged, in a camp of close-set neighbors,

behind al-Ghadi in the valley of al-'Ushayra, a gathering by night.

May Umm Kulthum be watered, though her home lies far away,

and her women, by a dark raincloud, then one coming at dawn—

black and thunder-shaken, its low cloudbanks pouring,

    with divisions rushing headlong away.

It climbed through the bends with fierce, headstrong force—

    dark, massive, thundering, steadily raining.

    تَرَيَّعُ مِنهُ بِالنِطافِ الحَواجِرُ

    And it spread from Dhahban, its crests heaped high;

the rain-catching hollows brimmed with its water.

It stayed over Jumdan a day and a night,

so Jumdan leaned and dwindled beneath it.

And it camped at al-Sakran two days, and lingered,

trailing along as a slow traveler trails,

with a dark rain-fringe: the east wind hurried it onward

and pushed it as one pushes a spent fawn.

And at dawn the outskirts of al-Marabid were flooded,

and Dahik and al-'Awaqir were flooded by it.

And at the rock of al-Mahw fell rain from its cloud,

with curtains of rain; al-Ghafa'ir sank beneath it.

And it spread across from the direction of al-Najil, as though it were

at Alyal, after leaving the palms behind, shouting threats.

    وَقَد جيدَ مِنهُ جَيدَةٌ فَعَبَاثِرُ

    And it passed, watering Yanbu' and then its southern reaches;

and Jayda had been drenched by it, then 'Abathir.

It had branches: one toward Yemen, and a foremost one

toward al-Sham, one toward Najd, and another to the lowlands.

Then, as it neared the two lava fields, it was led

by racing black masses, swollen with low cloudbanks.

It settled between Sal', al-'Aqiq, and Fari',

as far as Uhud, with fierce raincloud masses in its midst,

with a black, creeping cloud, as though its thunder were

the threats of camels with deep, gurgling roars.

Then by evening it poured water over Wu'ayra,

with clouds lingering over al-Liwa and the two valleys.

Then it cleared away from 'Ush, and by morning its rainclouds

were rainless wisps, while the sky's horizons lay bare.

In every freshened watercourse of Tihama,

    huge, wide-spreading torrents flowed.

They uprooted age-old thorn trees, as though they were

lions in its middle reaches, roaring to one another.

It left fallen arak and tandub trees,

and left blue waters in the wide reaches of the seas.

And every watercourse over which the sun had set

held adjoining pools watered by the Pleiades.

Nor is a doe with a grown fawn at al-'Alaya—

to whom lush ban growth amid fruiting arak yielded,

who grazes there in morning and evening cool, then rests

on heights where wild-ox calves take shelter—

more lovely in countenance than Umm al-Huwayrith,

on the evening my tears streamed, rushing down.
