And I was a man with an affliction of mine in al-Ghawr,

and another in Najd, repeating nothing and uttering nothing new.

So at times I turn my gaze toward Tihamah,

and at times I turn my gaze back toward Najd.

And I weep with longing when I part from Hind,

and when I part from Da‘d, I weep for Da‘d.

And youthful passion was youth’s companion; now the two

have left me alone amid their haunts.

So, by God, I do not know whether a phantom of the jinn

has visited me by night, or no one has felt longing like mine.

So do not reproach me, you two, if I lose heart, for I see

no one steadfast enough to bear love’s sighs.
