كَماas مَسَّtouched ظَهرَthe back of الحَيَّةِthe snake المُتَخَوِّفُthe fearful man
She grants little, amid distance and estrangement,
as a fearful man touches a snake's back.
مُنَعَّمَةٌpampered أَمّاas for مَلاثُthe place encircled by نِطاقِهاher girdle

Pampered—as for the place her girdle encircles,
it is ample; but her waist is slender.
فَذَرنيso leave me وَلَكِنand yet شاقَنيstirred my longing مُتَغَرّداtrilling

So leave me; yet a trilling cloud stirred my longing—
white-crested, loud at evening, thickly fringed.
خَفِيٌّhidden تَعَشّىfed at evening فيin البِحارِthe seas وَدونَهُand before it
مِنَof اللُجِّthe deep خُضرٌgreen expanses مُظلِماتٌdark وَسُدَّفُand dusky veils
Hidden, it fed at evening in the seas; before it
lay dark green waters of the deep and veils of gloom.
فَماso not زالَit ceased يَستَشريgathering force وَماand not زِلتُI ceased ناصِباًfixing
لَهُupon it بَصَريmy gaze حَتّىuntil غَداit became يَتَعَجرَفُblustering
So it kept gathering force, and I kept fixing
my gaze upon it, until it came blustering

إِذاwhen حَنَّgroaned فيهِwithin it رَعدُهُits thunder يَتَكَشَّفُit parts
from the sea, pitch-black, its cloud-mass unmixed.
Whenever its thunder groaned within it, it opened up.
إِذاwhen حَنَّgroaned فيهِwithin it الرَعدُthe thunder عَجَّroared وَأَرزَمَتand lowed

When thunder groaned within it, it roared, and lowed
in answer new-calved she-camels, mothers among them bending over their young.

جَميعاًall together وَأُخراهُand its rearmost part تَنوبُcomes in turn وَتُردِفُand follows behind
Its foremost ranks graze along its flanks,
all around, while its rearmost come in turn and follow.

When the wind struck it from behind, seeking to lift it,
it held fast, stubbornly intent on staying, rumbling.
ثَقيلُheavy الرَحىthe millstone-like core واهيfraying الكِفافِthe edges دَناdrew near لَهُto it

بِبيضِover the white الرُبىhilltops ذوone with هَيدَبٍtrailing rain-fringes مُتَعَصِّفُstorm-tossed
Heavy in its millstone core, fraying at the edges, it was approached
over the white hilltops by a storm-tossed cloud with trailing rain-fringes.
رَساsettled بِغُرانٍat Ghurān وَاِستَدارَتand wheeled بِهِaround it الرَحىthe millstone-like core
كَماas يَستَديرُturns الزاحِفُthe foot-dragging camel المُتَغَيِّفُthe swaying one
It settled at Ghurān, and its millstone wheeled around it,
as a weary, foot-dragging camel turns, swaying.
فَذاكَso that one سَقىwatered أُمَّmother of الحُوَيرِثِal-Huwayrith ماءَهُits water

So that cloud gave Umm al-Huwayrith its water,
where she had settled—its cloud-bands loosening, rumbling.
وَبَيتٍand a tent بِمَوماةٍin a wilderness مِنَof الأَرضِthe land مَجهَلٍtrackless
كَظِلِّlike the shadow of العقابِthe eagle تَستَقِلُّit takes flight وَتَخطُفُand it swoops
And a tent in a trackless expanse of earth,
like an eagle's shadow as it takes flight and swoops,
بَنَيتُI built لِفِتيانٍfor young men فَظَلَّso remained عِمادُهُits pole
بِداوِيَةٍin a desert قَفرٍbarren وَشيجٌa spear-wood shaft مُثَقَّفُstraightened
I built for young men; its pole remained
in a barren desert—a straightened spear-shaft.
وَنَحنُand we مَنَعناdefended بَينَbetween مَرٍّMarr وَرابِغٍand Rābigh
مِنَfrom الناسِthe people أَنthat يُغزىit be raided وَأَنand that يُتَكَّنَفُit be encircled
And we defended the land between Marr and Rābigh
against men's raids and encirclement.
إِذاwhen سَلَفٌan elder مِنّاof us مَضىwent لِسَبيلِهِon his way

حَمىprotected عَذِراتِthe courtyards of الحَيِّthe clan مَنwhoever يَتَخَلَّفُremains behind
When an elder of ours goes his way,
the one who remains protects the clan's courtyards.
