And they said—though they may lie—there is ominous augury in you,
They say - and they may lie - so beware
and ill fortune: whenever you are not obeyed, its crier cries out.
Ill omens come if their barking spokesman's not obeyed
فَأَعيَيتَناso you wearied us لاneither راضِياًcontent بِكَرامَةٍwith honor
وَلاnor تارِكاًleaving off شَكوىcomplaint about الَّذيthe one whom اَنتَyou صادِقُهhis friend
You have wearied us, neither content with honor
You’ve wearied us, neither pleased with generosity
nor ceasing to complain of the man you befriend.
Nor ceasing to complain, though you’re the truthful one
وَأَدرَكتَand you obtained صَفوَthe purest part of الوُدِّaffection مِنّاfrom us فَلُمتَناthen you blamed us

You obtained pure affection from us, yet blamed us,
You’ve attained the quintessence of love from us, so blame us
though we have no fault that would make us adulterators of it.
Though we’ve done no wrong - we just tasted it
وَأَلفَيتَناand you found us سِلماًat peace فَصَدَّعتَthen you split بَينَناbetween us

You found us at peace, then split us apart,
You found us at peace and caused dissent between us
as cutters split a hide apart.
As the seam splits the leather, though its stitches held it closed

He echoes within his breast, without lowing,
He brings it back in his throat if he's not downcast
a reed-pipe from his entrails, his cries hollow.
A bellyful from the entrails - his gullet distended

Whenever he darts toward the open plain, she catches up with him—
If he aims at the chief, missiles keep pace with him
a sturdy female, like a boulder from the crags, pelting him in turn.
Like the slingstones from the thrower's pouch pursuing him

He trails a tunic about him, as though he were
He drags behind him a train like a crescent moon
a captive of Hilāl whose wrappings remain untorn.
Whose banners none has ripped, its flagpoles unbroken
إِذاif المَرءُa man لَمnot يَبذُلoffers مِنَof الوُدِّaffection مِثلَماas much as

If a man does not offer as much affection as
When a man doesn't give as much affection as I gave him
I offered him, then know that I am parting from him.
Let him know that I shall leave him
وَلاand no خَيرَgood فيin وُدِّthe affection of اِمرِئٍa man مُتَكارِهٍreluctant

There is no good in the affection of a man reluctant
No good in the love of one who's forced to show it
to give it, nor in a companion with whom you do not agree.
Nor in a friend who doesn't match you

صَنيعَةُa kindness of قُربىkinship أَوor صَديقٌa friend توامِقُهyou love him
If the giving of wealth is not required of him
If money doesn't oblige him to be generous
by a kindness due to kin, or a friend you love,
Either through family duties or a like-minded comrade

فَلَمso not يَفتَلِذكَwrest from you المالَthe wealth إِلّاexcept حَقائِقُهits rightful claims
you withhold it; some withholding is prudence and strength.
You refused out of caution and firmness combined
Then only its rightful claims wrest wealth from you.
Money allures only according to its realities
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle أَفادَhe acquired المالَwealth أَودىdid away بِفَضلِهِwith its surplus

Whenever he acquires wealth, its surplus is swept away
When wealth brings benefit, its surplus creates
by rightful claims; the reproaching women's displeasure suits him.
Rights - and the hostile one correspondingly agrees
وَيَرفَعُand raises نَصلَthe blade of السَيفِthe sword عَنabove كَعبِthe ankle of ساقِهِhis leg

And the sword's blade is lifted above his ankle
And lifts the sword-hilt clear of his ankle-bone
by his shoulder, even if the smith lengthens the sword-straps.
Though, were the scabbard longer, it would reach his shoulder
فَبورِكَso blessed be ماwhat أَعطىgave اِبنُthe son of لَيلىLaylā بِنِيَّةٍwith intent

So blessed be what Ibn Laylā gave with intent,
Bless what Leyla's son gave with good intent
and what Ibn Laylā gave, both silent wealth and speaking wealth.
And what Leyla's son gave in silence matches it
