تَلهوshe frolics فَتَختَضِعُso they bow low المَطِيُّthe riding camels أَمامَهاbefore her
تَلهو فَتَختَضِعُ المَطِيُّ أَمامَها
وَتَخِبُّand she trots هَروَلَةَthe running gait of الظَليمِthe male ostrich النافِرِfleeing
وَتَخِبُّ هَروَلَةَ الظَليمِ النافِرِ
She frolics, and the riding beasts bow before her;
She frolics, and the riding camels bow low before her,
she trots with the quick gait of a startled cock ostrich.
and she trots at the pace of a fleeing male ostrich.
وَإِذاand when الفَلاةُthe wilderness تَعَرَّضَتstretched across the way غيطانُهاits hollows
وَإِذا الفَلاةُ تَعَرَّضَت غيطانُها
نَهَضَتshe rose بِأَتلَعَwith a long neck فيin الجَديلِthe plaited halter عَراعِرِmighty and tall
نَهَضَت بِأَتلَعَ في الجَديلِ عَراعِرِ
And when the desert’s hollows open out,
And when the desert's hollows stretch across her way,
she rises, her long neck towering within the plaited rein.
she rises with a long, mighty neck in the plaited halter.
وَسَجَتand trotted briskly دَعائِمُpillar-like legs وَاِستَعجَلَتand she hastened
وَسَجَت دَعائِمُ وَاِستَعجَلَت
مِنfrom وَقعِهِنَّtheir footfalls بِصائِبٍwith a sure strike مُتَبادِرِswiftly darting
مِن وَقعِهِنَّ بِصائِبٍ مُتَبادِرِ
Her pillar-legs flow on and hasten,
And her pillar-like legs trot briskly, and she hastens,
under their sure tread, stroke following swiftly upon stroke.
driven by their footfalls, with a sure, swift step.
تَعدوshe runs بِخيطَفٍwith a quick-moving leg مَأطورَةٍbent
تَعدو بِخيطَفٍ مَأطورَةٍ
ويدٍand a foreleg لَهاof hers نَسَجَتwove بِضَبعٍwith an upper arm مائِرِswinging
ويدٍ لَها نَسَجَت بِضَبعٍ مائِرِ
She runs with a slender, tightly drawn waist,
She runs with a swift, bent leg,
and a foreleg woven into a swaying upper arm.
and a foreleg of hers weaving with a swinging upper arm.
وَإِذاand when المَطِيُّthe riding camels تَحَدَّرَتdrooped أَعطافُهُits flanks
وَإِذا المَطِيُّ تَحَدَّرَت أَعطافُهُ
نَضَحَoozed الكَحيلُthe tar بِهِover it كَجَوفِlike the inside of القاطِرِthe pitch-vat
نَضَحَ الكَحيلُ بِهِ كَجَوفِ القاطِرِ
And when the mount’s flanks stream downward,
And when the riding camels' flanks droop,
dark sweat bedews it, like the hollow of a dripping vessel.
tar oozes over them as in the belly of a pitch-vat.
وَكَساand clothed مَعاطِسَهاher nostrils اللُغامُthe mouth-foam وَلُفِّعَتand were swathed
وَكَسا مَعاطِسَها اللُغامُ وَلُفِّعَت
فيهِin it حَواجِبُthe brows of عَينِهاher eye بغَفائِرِwith veils
فيهِ حَواجِبُ عَينِها بغَفائِرِ
Foam mantles her nostrils, and she is wrapped in it;
And foam clothes her nostrils, and swathes
in it, her eye-brows are veiled by dense fringes—
the brows above her eye in veils of it.
زَهِمُfat-laden المَشاشِthe bone-ends مِنَfrom among النَواشِطِthe roaming wild beasts بِاللَوىat al-Liwa
زَهِمُ المَشاشِ مِنَ النَواشِطِ بِاللَوى
أَوor بِالجَنابِat al-Janab رَأَينَthey saw أَسهُمَthe arrows of عائِرِa hunter
أَو بِالجَنابِ رَأَينَ أَسهُمَ عائِرِ
like the thick-jointed roaming wild beasts at al-Liwā,
Fat-jointed, of the wild beasts roaming at al-Liwa,
or at al-Janāh, when they catch sight of errant arrows.
or at al-Janab—they saw a hunter's arrows.
