Is Saʿda departing? Yes, she will depart,

As a companion is severed from his companion's bond.

Is it because camels were bridled and neighbors departed,

And the raven of parting cried, that you are sorrowful?

As though you had never heard or seen before this

The parting of close companions who feel longing—

Longing for their companions, now that

This morning certainty has emerged for them from doubt.

At dawn, ʿAzza's departing litters stirred longing,

As their companions began to draw away.

When her camels rose from their resting-place

And appeared bearing their loads, I said, 'Ships!'

They swayed in the harbor, then left it,

Their heavy burdens appearing as cargoes.

It was as though, once they were turned aside from Wasit's stony tract

And left al-Nujayl's watering pools behind, I had been pierced.

So I followed them with my eyes, until there closed

Over them the dark summits of Khafaynan.

For the rocky ridge of al-Hamatayn came between us,

And branches of al-Bulayd's valley stretched across.

And the tribe's caravan eluded you, as there rolled

Beneath them Yanbuʿ's ridges and hollows.

And from Radwa and Daybar rose, screening them,

High pinnacles where ibex have their strongholds.

Upon the bay-colored ones, or their like, except that these

    Are tawny, red-flanked, and dark.

And riders from ʿAbathir stretched across my view of them,

And a brow of Radwa's grim ridge.

So they failed to keep my appointment and betrayed my trust,

And whoever betrays a trust has no faith.

And they bequeathed him separation, so he became as though

Madness possessed him on the day of al-Surayr.

They belied the purity of affection on the day of Shanuka,

And weakness in their pledge caught up with me.

Indeed, a companion who brings about estrangement whenever

You go away and his home grows distant is surely untrustworthy.

And al-Hajibiyya's phantom visited in the night,

And passed, though Qarn and Ranin lay between me and her.

And many a reproaching woman, hoping I would yield, I rebuffed,

Saying that I have no softness for reproaching women.

She reproaches a man in the prime of his youth,

Yet there is a time to forsake passion's companions.

She does not realize, as she reproaches me, that youthful passion

Has been youth's companion since the age of ʿAd.

And I know full well, even were both to last, that I

Shall one day lie buried in a pit of death.

And that I have never known or found youthful passion

To have a fitting companion other than youth.

And that the whitening of the head brings good sense,

Yet the ruins of youth still lend beauty.

By my life, a bitter ordeal has weighed upon me,

And a far-off dwelling that lodged you at al-Buwayb.
