طَبِنَ العَدُوُّ لَها فَغَيَّرَ حالَها
May my father and mother be your ransom—what a wronged woman you are!
By my father and mother you are of the oppressed
The enemy took notice of her and changed her circumstances.
The enemy was pleased with her and changed her state
لَوif أَنَّthat عَزَّةَʿAzza خاصَمَتcontended with شَمسَthe sun الضُحىmidmorning

في الحُسنِ عِندَ مُوَفَّقٍ لَقَضى لَها
If ʿAzza contended with the midmorning sun
If only Azzeh contended with the sun at dawn
in beauty before a rightly guided judge, he would rule in her favor.
In beauty in the eyes of Muwaffaq he would judge for her

جَعَلَ المَليكُ خُدودَهُنَّ نِعالَها
And women brought me word of ʿAzza’s estrangement;
And women came to me wearing the anklets of Azzeh's pride
may the Sovereign make their cheeks her sandals!
The King made their cheeks his slippers
