وَأَنتِand you (feminine) التيwho حَبَّبتِyou made dear شَغبيShaghbi (place name) إِلىas far as بَداBada (place name)
إِلَيَّto me وَأَوطانيand my homelands بِلادٌlands سِواهُماother than those two
And you are the one who made Shaghbi, as far as Bada, dear
You are the one who made my mischief dear to the wilderness
To me, though my homelands are lands other than those two.
And to me my homelands are no lands but them
وَحَلَّتand she lodged بِهَذاin this place حَلَّةًa stay ثُمَّthen أَصبَحَتshe was in the morning
بِأُخرىat another فَطابَso became pleasant الوادِيانthe two valleys كِلاهُماboth of them
And she lodged here for a stay, then by morning was
It dawned in this guise then in another
At another place; so both valleys became pleasant.
So the two valleys were pleasant each
إِذاwhenever ذَرَفَتshed tears عَينايَmy two eyes أَعتَلُّI make excuses بالقَذىby citing grit
وَعَزَّةُand Azza لَوif only يَدريknew الطَبيبُthe physician قَذاهُماthe grit in them both
Whenever my eyes shed tears, I blame it on grit,
When my eyes shed tears I feign having an eye disease
And Azza—if the physician only knew—is the grit in them both.
Though dignity, if the doctor knew the cause of them
فَلَوso if تُذرِيانِthey both shed الدَمعَtears مُنذُsince استَهَلَّتاthey first wept
عَلىin إِثرِthe wake of جازيone who repays نِعمَةٍa kindness لَجَزاهُماhe would have repaid them both
So, had they shed tears ever since they first wept,
If only they would shed tears since they first started
In the wake of one who repays kindness, he would have repaid them both.
In return for one who rewarded kindness, I would reward them
