There shall come to the Commander of the Faithful—though between us lie
The Commander of the Faithful will come with
Hisma's massive hills, its mesas and its rugged ground—
Crowds whose determination and sorrow are evident

my echoes, answering one another in every ode
My echoes respond to every poem
of verse, offered to one who will not disdain it.
That I dedicate to one who does not disgrace it

In it I exalt the house of Marwan; indeed they,
I exalt the family of Marwan in it, for they
when fear spreads among 'Abd Shams, are its fortresses—
When the fear of a slave of the sun spread, their fortresses protected it

lions dwelling in their lairs in the valley of Dhu Hamas,
Lions in the valleys of fervent zeal, vigilant
tender toward their cubs, their den protected.
Protecting their cubs from the mountains' peaks

When they seek the highest honors, they attain them
When they sought the highest virtues, they attained
through what a people's ancestral merits and faith have achieved.
What the accounts of a people and their religion reached
لَقَدindeed جَهَدَstrove الأَعداءُthe enemies فَوتَكَeluding you جُهدَهُمtheir utmost effort
وَضافَتكَand visited you أَبكارُthe maiden ones الخُطوبِof calamities وَعونُهاand their seasoned ones
Indeed, the enemies strove their utmost to elude you,
The enemies exerted themselves in vain, their efforts failed
and calamities, maiden and seasoned, have visited you.
While maidens of battles came to your aid
فَماso not وَجَدواthey found فيكَin you اِبنَson of مَروانَMarwan سَقطَةًa lapse
وَلاnor جَهلَةًa foolish act فيin مَأزِقٍa crisis تَستَكينُهاyou yield to it
So they found in you, son of Marwan, no lapse,
They did not find in you, O son of Marwan, any flaw
nor folly to which you succumb in a crisis.
Nor an ignorant one in dire straits seeking refuge

But in grave affairs they found in you a nature
Rather, they tested in you a distant, sleepless vigor
whose soil lies deep and whose stony ground is unyielding.
Its wealth overflowing and its essence pure

When they overstep its kindness, it delivers them
If they exceeded its favors, it surrendered them
into deep waters whose great fish grants swimmers no respite.
To a torrent in which swimmers cannot see its depths

Whenever he intends a campaign, his resolve is not swayed
When he intended to raid, no steed swayed his resolve
by a chaste woman adorned with a string of pearls.
Adorned with a string of pearls that graced it

She forbade him; when she saw her prohibition had not held him back,
It cautioned him, but when the caution went unheeded
she wept, and her household wept at what had grieved her.
It wept, crying from the pain that distressed it

Nor did her dissuasion turn him back amid his longing,
Nor did its caution dissuade him in his youth
on the morning her tear ducts streamed with tears.
The day its affairs commenced with tears

But he pressed on, strong in resolve and steadfast,
Rather, the resolute man of principle went forth
following a path of manifest truth that he clearly discerns.
To the clear, evident truth that revealed it

I smell the pervading scent in his turban that showed
by his prudence are the hardiness of a body that supports it,
His belt on a body that gives it strength

As it had purified rage in the blows of its spearheads
