تَوَلَّى شَبابي واِرجَحَنَّ شَبابُها
Buthayna shot at me with deliberate intent, after
After my youth had gone, Buthaina blamed me
my youth had passed and her youth had reached its fullness,
When her youth was in its prime and mine on the wane,
بِعَينينِwith two eyes نَجلاوَينِwide لَوif رَقرَقَتهُمَاshe made them both glisten
بِعَينينِ نَجلاوَينِ لَو رَقرَقَتهُمَا

لِنَوءِ الثُريا لاستَهَلَّ سَحَابُها
with two wide eyes—if she made them glisten
With two bright black eyes, which, had she shot me a glance,
at the Pleiades’ rain-season, their clouds would pour.
The Pleiades would have bowed down in homage;
وَلكِنَّماand yet only تَرمِينَyou shoot at نَفسًاa soul مَريضَةًailing

لِعَزَّة مِنها صَفوُها وَلُبابُها
Yet you only shoot at an ailing soul
But she shot at a soul which was sick at the core
whose purest part and innermost essence belong to ʿAzza.
Keeping its honour and purity evermore.
