Ghadirah's camel litters, departing at dawn, saddened

my heart, unbidden and quite by chance.

O Ghadirah, had you witnessed, the morning you all departed,

the visiting women bending over my pillow,

you would have pitied a lover you had not requited,

whose piercing wounds are seared by fire-sticks.

And on the day of the horses, she unveiled and drew back

her striped cloak from cool, evenly set teeth,

and from a wide eye that sheds tears within its white,

when it weeps, and looks through its black,

and from densely tangled hair, thick within its braids,

luxuriant in growth, with curly sidelocks.

And Ghadirah, this morning, though she has gone far from us

and the breadth of the land now lies between us and her,

is the dearest woman in a litter; the daughters of my soul

thirst for her—if only they might be moistened by her.

And before the affection I hoped to gain,

even if I pressed her for it, lies stripping thorns from qatad.

And the counselors said, “Win from her

a generous gift, before she shows her niggardly nature.

For soon you may no longer see her,

as misfortunes rush between you and Ghadirah.

She had promised you affection, if you would draw near,

yet coyness drove you stubbornly into estrangement.”

So I concealed my regret on the day the call went out

from the crier to bring back Ghadirah's camels.

Separation from them dragged on, and by evening

its prolonging had made my eye's tears relentless.

Sleep was indeed denied me; I spent my night

with worries keeping me away from the pillow.

Something other than hatred kept me from visiting you:

your dwelling among broad, hard stones.

And I say, even if I have not visited him:

May the steady rains of night and morning clouds water

the dwelling of the kinsman of Banu Asad—Qanuna,

    to Yabah, to Bark al-Ghimad.

You dwell at al-Majazah in Qanuna,

while your people are at al-Ujayfir and al-Thimad.

May you not be lost! For to every young man will come

death, calling by night or coming in the morning.

And every treasure must one day,

even if it endures, be exhausted.

It pains me that we should set out together at dawn,

and you should end up lying, hostage in a valley.

If you could be ransomed from the calamity of death,

I would have shielded you with newly acquired and ancestral wealth.

You would indeed have made yourself heard, had you called someone alive,

but there is no life in the one you call.
