I marveled at being cured of you, O ʿAzz, after

I had lived for a time, unwell because of you.

And if my soul’s recovery from you is a relief to me,

then it has recovered, if that is what relieves me.

My head’s covering fell away from me, but scarcely

did my heart’s covering lift to leave me free.

The heart ceased pining for the elder of the two after a long while,

and from the younger of the two I was dealt a ‘son of Barīḥ’—a calamity.

So do not mention ʿUqaybah in my presence, you two, for

my soul departs whenever ʿUqaybah departs.
