تذكرن بالميث الاداحي مقصراً
وهاجand stirred لهنfor them العقربيّScorpio’s rain cloud المغرَّبُdriven westward
وهاج لهن العقربيّ المغرَّبُ
They recalled the nesting hollows in the soft earth toward evening,
I am reminded of the ruins of Al-Mu'allaqat so derelict
and Scorpio’s westward-driven rain cloud stirred them,
Whose scorpions glow at dusk ready to creep about
بغيبةin the absence of صيفsummer rain لاnot يُؤَتيsupplies نطافَهاtheir water pools
بغيبة صيف لا يُؤَتي نطافَها
ليبلغهاso it may reach them ماwhat أخطأتهmissed it المضبِّبُthe mist-spreading cloud
ليبلغها ما أخطأته المضبِّبُ
with summer rain absent, their pools left unfilled,
Without a summer shower to moisten the soil
to reach those the mist-spreading cloud had missed.
