ولن أَخبِّرَ جاري من حليلته
بماof what تضمنتenclosed الأسرارthe secrets والكللُand the bed-curtains
بما تضمنت الأسرار والكللُ
Nor will I tell my neighbor, concerning his wife,
what secrets and bed-curtains conceal.
ولنand will not أبيتI spend the night منof الأسرارthe secrets هينمةa low murmur
ولن أبيت من الأسرار هينمة
علىover دقاريرmalicious tales أحكيهاI recount them وافتعلُand I fabricate
على دقارير أحكيها وافتعلُ
Nor will I spend the night murmuring secrets,
over malicious tales I recount and invent.
لاnot خطوتيmy step تتعاطىreaches for غيرother than موضعهاits proper place
لا خطوتي تتعاطى غير موضعها
ولاand not يديmy hand فيinto حميتa leather butter-bag السَّكنthe household تندخلُenters
ولا يدي في حميت السَّكن تندخلُ
My step does not reach beyond its proper place,
nor does my hand slip into the household’s butter-bag.
