Ours are the pilgrims’ basin and its two water-bearers,

and the place where the alighting riders set foot,

and the channel for blood, and where they cast

    hair, both braided and loose.

We were the ones who deferred for Maʿadd

their sacred months into the non-sacred season.

    وكان لنا المُمَرَّ من السحيلِ

    We declared them sacred at one time and lawful at another;

and ours was the tightly twisted cord, not the single strand.

For Judhām departed, when it went far away,

with Abū Dūdān’s plumage, its lineage well known.

And your name—had an augur read the flight of birds—

would have been birds giving a clear omen of your parting.
