And in the barren year he would be life-giving rain,

When the ill-tempered she-camel yielded none of her milk,

وروحت اللقاح مُبهلت

ولم تعطف على الرُبع السَّلوبُ

And the milch camels were brought home at dusk with udders untied,

And the bereaved she-camel showed no tenderness toward the spring-born calf;

وكان السوف للفتيان قوتاً

وكان السوف للفتيان قوتاً

تعيش به وهُيِّبَت الرقوب

تعيش به وهُيِّبَت الرقوب

And the scent of food was sustenance for the young men,

On which they lived, and the childless woman was held in awe;

وصار وقودهم للحي أما

وهان على المخبأة الشحوبُ

وهان على المخبأة الشحوبُ

And their fire became a mother to the clan,

And the secluded woman cared little for her pallor.
