Can the youth that has passed be reclaimed,

Or is its vanished past never to return?

    فالدهر يأتي بأنواع من العجبِ

    Leave off weeping for what can no longer be attained;

For time brings many kinds of wonder.

For one thing recalls another; consider the fate

Of what, should it vanish one day, will never return.

Would that youth had not departed, turning its back,

And that its familiar, departed self had never vanished.

Whoever wears gray hair recalls from his youth

What will never return, and his fresh new garments,

As a thirsty wanderer recalls, amid the blaze

Of scorching noon, raincloud water in his thirst.
