At a time when, to every hollow, there drew near

Though dawn drew near each basin filled with rain,

Rivulets that benefit no one who set them flowing;

Its showers on all who asked in vain,

Rivulets that make no shoot sprout in the soil,

Downpours that never make woodlands grow,

Nor do those hovering thirstily share their leftover water.

Nor tempt the thirsty beasts to go.
