من الحرَّ والبعد والقسطل
And many a wilderness where the guide lost his way
In a wilderness where guides lost their way
from the heat, the distance, and the clouds of dust—
Due to the heat, distance, and rugged terrain
تعسفتهاyou crossed it without a path فمزجتthen you mixed المياهthe waters
تعسفتها فمزجت المياه
بالدمwith blood والطعمand poison والحنظلand colocynth
بالدم والطعم والحنظل
you crossed it without a path, then mixed the waters
It wreaked havoc, mixing water
with blood, poison, and colocynth.
With blood, taste, and colocynth
ولماand when تخلفlagged عنكbehind you الدليلthe guide
ولما تخلف عنك الدليل
رأوكthey saw you لهاfor it جحفلa mighty host الجحفلof the mighty host
رأوك لها جحفل الجحفل
And when the guide lagged behind you,
And when guides failed you
they saw you as a host of hosts to face it.
Flocks of sheep saw you as their guide
