وأمand the mother of جذامJudham كانwas عبارa crossing قومa people
وأم جذام كان عبار قوم
علىupon; to قومanother people وعطفand the compassion of ذيone possessed of العقولreason
على قوم وعطف ذي العقول
And Judham's mother was one people's crossing
And the mother of Jutham was among a people
to another people, and a wise man's compassion.
Who turned against a people, those of sound minds.
الجتهمcompelled them مباعدةestrangement وكانواand they were
الجتهم مباعدة وكانوا
بنيsons of الهوانabasement فيamid الظلمoppression المصولassault-ridden
بني الهوان في الظلم المصول
Estrangement drove them away, and they were
They became estranged from them, though they were
sons of abasement amid oppression and assault.
The sons of ignominy in overwhelming injustice.
فباتواso they spent the night منof بنيthe sons of أسدAsad عليهمupon them
فباتوا من بني أسد عليهم
مجازpassage; safe-conduct منfrom خزيمةKhuzaymah ذيpossessed of القبولfavor; acceptance
مجاز من خزيمة ذي القبول
So they spent the night as sons of Asad, bearing
The sons of Asad spent the night attacking them,
safe-conduct from Khuzaymah, the well-regarded.
As well as the noble Khuza'a tribe.
وقالواand they said بالأيامنamong the Yemenis منتماهمtheir descent
وقالوا بالأيامن منتماهم
فياand oh بُعْدَthe remoteness of المبيتthe night's lodging منfrom المقيلthe noonday resting place
فيا بُعْدَ المبيت من المقيل
And they said their descent lay among the Yemenis—
They said they would fulfill their oaths against them—
how far the night's lodging from the noonday resting place!
Oh, how far is the distance between this night's rest and the final resting place!
