And calamities did not scowl at you.
The turn of fate did not frown at you,
Nor were you, because of them, an idle stay-at-home.
Nor were you spoiled by luxury’s excess;
ولمand not تكyou were شِهدارةan insolent, sharp-tongued man الأبعدينthose farther away
ولم تك شِهدارة الأبعدين
ولاand not زمَّحa surly man الأقربينthose nearer الشريراthe wicked one
ولا زمَّح الأقربين الشريرا
Nor were you insolent toward those far away,
You were no tale-bearer of distant men,
nor wicked and surly toward those close to you.
Nor did the wicked mock their neighbor near;
ولمand not تكyou were لاجَيرno, indeed للأبعدfor the more distant (continued)
ولم تك لاجَير للأبعد

Nor were you—no, indeed—for the distant
You were no refuge for unworthy men,
ones, marrow of a shinbone that answers the whistle.
A broken reed that sighs when waters stir;

Your bounty, if you fail to succor fools,
