فأي أمرىء أنت أي أمرىء
إذاwhen الزجرshouting لمdoes not يستدرdraw milk from الزجوراthe she-camel milked by shouting
إذا الزجر لم يستدر الزجورا
So what a man you are—what a man!
What man art thou, what man art thou
When shouting fails to draw milk from the she-camel milked by shouting,
If chiding cannot make thee chaste
ولمand does not تعطyield بالعصبby binding the belly منهاamong them العصوthe belly-bound milch camel (word continues)
ولم تعط بالعصب منها العصو
بcompletes the preceding word; no separate meaning إلاexcept النهيتwheezing وإلاand except الطحيراstrained grunting
ب إلا النهيت وإلا الطحيرا
And among them the belly-bound milch camel yields nothing when bound,
If the virgins’ zone cannot withhold thee back
Except wheezing, and except strained grunts.
If thou art not forbidden or cannot see reason
يضجmakes cry out رواغيbellowing camels أقرانهمtheir peers
يضج رواغي أقرانهم
لهُلاَّكهاto their slaughterers ويكيسand makes hobble on three legs العقيراthe hamstrung camel
لهُلاَّكها ويكيس العقيرا
Their peers’ bellowing camels are made to cry out
Thy peers in age will clamour for thy ruin
To their slaughterers, and the hamstrung camel is made to hobble.
And the honoured ladies will conceal their charms
