هل لحال من اقتياض بحال

رب مغبون صفقة غير آلِ

Is there any escape from a state,

Of a swindled lord in a bad deal?

أم لشيب علا المفارق بيع

بالشباب المُرَجِّلِ الذيَّالِ

Or from old age overtaking the youth,

Selling with exuberance which enthralls?

كيف أشرى معيشة صرت فيها

بعد ميلولة الصبا لاعتدالِ

How can I live a life in which,

After the prime of youth's balance,

من يبع بالشباب شيباً فقد با

ع رخيصاً من العُلوق بغالِ

Whoever sells his youth for old age, has sold

Cheaply, from the most precious gems.

لو ينال الكبير في حرفة البيـ

ـع وصرف الأموال بالأموالِ

If the elderly man gains in the craft of

Selling and exchanging money for money,

ليلة من شبابه لم يبعْها

من ليالي مشيبه بليالي

He would not have sold a night of his youth,

For nights of his old age.

ولكل من المعيشة نحو

بالُ ذي الشيب للفتى غيرُ بالِ

And for each life has a path,

The old man's is unlike the young man's.

كل أنواع ذلك العيش قد ذقـ

ـت وما زال من جديد وبالِ

I have tasted all kinds of that life,

Still anew, with affliction and trials,

ولبست الشباب غضاً وأجريـ

ـت دداً في الغرانق الأزوالِ

And worn youth when still unripe,

And roamed as one exotic and strange.
