ناراً من الحرب لا بالمدح نقَّبها
قدحُstriking sparks الأكُفِّthe palms لومreproach ينفحis fanned بهاwith it العُطَبُthe cotton (tinder)
قدحُ الأكُفِّ لوم ينفح بها العُطَبُ
A fire of war, pierced not by praise,
A fire from war not dug with praise
but by the striking of palms—reproach; cotton is fanned with it.
