عَدَوتُمyou attacked عَلىagainst مَولايَmy ally تَهتَضِمونَهُyou wrong him
بِناحِيَةٍin a corner مِنof جانِبِthe side of العَيِّfolly; ineptitude تَرتَعيyou graze
You attacked my ally, treating him unjustly,
You have attacked my master, tearing him down,
Grazing in a corner on the side of folly.
In an area on the hillside where you graze,
مَواليallies of بَنيthe sons of عَمروٍʿAmr وَأَهلِand people of أَمانَةٍtrust
وَقُربىand kinship فَلَمyet not يَنفَعهُمُavail them قيدَthe measure of إِصبَعِa finger
Allies of the sons of ʿAmr, and people of trust
My loyal kinsmen of Banu 'Amr and people of integrity,
And kinship—yet it availed them not a finger’s breadth.
His close relatives could not help him, not one bit.
فَعَرَّضتُمُso you exposed أَحلامَكُمyour judgment وَدِماءَكُمand your blood
بَواءًas equal recompense لِأَذوادٍfor small camel herds بِعَيهَمَat ʿAyham أَربَعِfour
So you put your judgment and your blood at risk,
So you exposed your dreams and your blood,
In equal exchange for four small camel herds at ʿAyham.
As fodder for the wolves with their howling cries,
فَإِنso if يَكُis أَوسٌAws حَيَّةًa snake مُستَميتَةًdesperately fierce
فَدَعنيthen leave me وَأَوساًand Aws إِنَّindeed رُقيَتَهُthe charm against him مَعيwith me
So if Aws is a desperately fierce snake,
If Aus remains alive, though weakened,
Then leave Aws to me: I have the charm against him.
Then leave me with Aus, for its prestige is with me.
