أَبلِغtell أَباAbu (father of) كَنَفٍKanaf إِمّاif ever عَرَضتَyou happen to pass بِهِby him
وَالأَبجَرَينِand the two Abjars وَوَهباًand Wahb وَاِبنَand the son of مَنظورِManzur
Tell Abu Kanaf, if you happen upon him,
Tell Abū Kanaf and both Abjarayns and Wahb and Ibn Manẓūr
and the two Abjars, and Wahb, and Ibn Manzur:
Indeed, nor spears nor raiders attacking randomly
أَلاis there no طِعانَspear-thrusting وَلاand no فُرسانِhorsemen عادِيَةًcharging
إِلّاexcept تَجَشُّؤُكُمyour belching عِندَbeside التَنانيرِthe ovens
Have you no spear-thrusts, no charging horsemen—
Except your cowardice when facing spears
only your belching beside the ovens?
Then gather when our eyes redden
ثُمَّthen اِحضُروناcome to us إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle اِحمَرَّturn red أَعيُنُناour eyes
فيon كُلِّevery يَومٍday يُزيلُsweeps away الهامَthe heads مَذكورِrenowned
Then come before us when our eyes turn red,
Every day that makes oblivion disappear
on every renowned day that sweeps heads away.
You met horsemen without weakness or retreat
تَلقَواyou will meet فَوارِسَhorsemen لاnot ميلاًunsteady riders وَلاnor عُزُلاًunarmed men
وَلاnor هَلابيجَhulking fools رَوّاثينَdropping dung فيin الدورِthe houses
You will meet horsemen, neither unsteady nor unarmed,
Nor EU officials wandering around palaces
nor hulking fools dropping dung in their houses.
You met Usayd, 'Amr and their cousin
تَلقَواyou will meet أُسَيداًUsayd وَعَمراًand Amr وَاِبنَand the son of عَمِّهِماtheir paternal uncle
وَرقاءَWarqa فيamong النَفَرِthe band of men الشُعثِthe disheveled المَغاويرِthe daring raiders
You will meet Usayd and Amr, and their cousin,
And Raqā' among the disheveled few warriors
Warqa, amid the disheveled band of daring raiders,
From the family of Kurz, known early at dawn
مِنfrom آلِthe clan of كُرزِKurz غَداةَon the morning of الرَوعِthe alarm قَدalready عُرِفواthey have been known
عِندَat القِتالِbattle إِلىto رُكنٍRukn وَمَحبورِand Mahbur
of the clan of Kurz, already known on the morning of alarm
In battle to the corner and siege
in battle, to Rukn and Mahbur.
They challenge their peers in every battlefield
يَحدونَthey drive أَقرانَهُمtheir opponents فيin كُلِّevery مُعتَرِكٍbattlefield
طَعناًwith spear-thrusts وَضَرباًand blows كَشَقٍّlike splitting بِالمَناشيرِwith saws
They drive their opponents on every battlefield,
With stabbing and striking like splitting with saws
with spear-thrusts and blows like cleaving with saws.
So ask your horsemen on the day of plenty
فَاِسأَلso ask فَوارِسَhorsemen مِنكُمfrom among you يَومَthe day of ذيDhu (possessor of) سَرَفٍSaraf
عَنكُمabout you وَفُرسانَكُمand your horsemen يَومَthe day of اليَعاميرِal-Ya'amir
So ask the horsemen among you from the day of Dhu Saraf
About you and your horsemen on the day of Yá'āmīr
about yourselves, and your horsemen from the day of al-Ya'amir.
Every one of us with the lower (legs) bandaged comes to you
يَعدوgallops بِناwith us كُلُّevery مَعصوبٍtightly sinewed أَسافِلُهُits lower limbs
وَكُلُّand every شَعثاءَshaggy mare بِالوَعثاءِthrough loose sand مِحضيرِswift-running
Every steed with sinewy lower limbs gallops with us,
And every dusty one with fine dust prepared
and every shaggy mare, swift through the loose sand.
No, by the Lord of the swaying spinners, with us
كَلّاNo indeed وَرَبِّby the Lord of القِلاصِthe young she-camels الراقِصاتِdancing along بِناwith us
عَشِيَّةَon the evening of النَفرِdeparture أَمثالَlike القَراقيرِgreat ships
No! By the Lord of the young she-camels dancing along with us,
In the evening are sorts like locusts
on the evening of departure, like great ships:
You will not be left when we shoot your palms
لاnot تُترَكُنَّyou shall be left alone وَلَمّاand not yet نُبلِwe test نَجدَتَكُمyour courage
وَلَمand not نُغاوِركُمُwe assail you ضَربَwith the blows of المَغاويرِthe daring raiders
You shall not be left alone while we have not yet tested your courage,
And we did not betray you by striking warriors
nor assailed you with the blows of daring raiders,
Until we let you taste striking with an Indian sword
حَتّىuntil نُذيقَكُمُwe make you taste ضَرباًblows بِمُخلَصَةٍwith a pure blade
هِندِيَّةٍIndian وَقِتالٍand fighting لَيسَis not بِالزورِa sham
until we make you taste blows from a pure
And fighting not false
Indian blade, and battle that is no sham.
