Is it because of traces of ruined dwellings at Tawdih, like a line of writing,

then what has weathered at Sha‘r, then the rise of al-Jafr,

to al-Nakhl, then al-‘Arjayn, around Suwayqa,

that you find solace among white gazelles needing no drink and tawny ones?

Desolate lands, where Umm Rafi‘ once pastured

their valley channels, between al-Asilla and the rocks.

And when she was a full-bodied maiden, like a silver ingot,

smooth in what showed at her neckline and upper chest,

like a doe at Hawmal nourishing a fawn,

faint of cry, neither newborn nor loudly bellowing.

From al-Nanat, or its heights, she was lured

by the watercourses of Jawfa, then al-Nawasif, then al-Hatr.

When the sun was a bowshot from its veil,

she screened herself from it with arak branches and lote trees.

So, rider, if ever you pass that way, surely convey

to ‘Aqil, if you meet them, and Abu Bakr,

that you are among the best of people to your own people,

though some talk in the assemblies is like foul abuse.

Leave a tract aside; we shall settle in a tract,

spacious for you, between al-Yamama and al-Qahr.

Has your people's number—as many as pebbles—deceived you,

and the surplus numbers in Ru'as and in Wabr?

As though you had been told, or knew,

that my allies are among those who neither sleep nor travel by night.

You lie, by the House of God—wait until you grapple with

    the first assaults of a war that neither softens nor yields;

and we ride horses among which there is no truce,

and ply our spears against hulking, ruddy men.

So we are not men who hang back; our spears are bent,

nor are we men who turn away from the traders' banner.

And we are indeed of a noble, mighty people,

when horses come racing up with their riders.

And we, whenever the horses' gallop catches up with us,

put on for them the skin of black serpents and leopards.

By my life, you two were truly debased when you said,

“Ours are might and the ally,” and so you two hastened my departure.

    أَبى الذَمَّ وَاِختارَ الوَفاءَ عَلى الغَدرِ

    My father is the rider of al-Dahya, ‘Amr son of ‘Amir;

he shunned reproach and chose loyalty over treachery.

And I am surely the most wretched of men if you must pay

for the consequences of the slain of Khuzayma and al-Khudr.

I bear liability for the slain of a people I do not belong to,

nor am I their ally, nor is their victory mine.

They say, “Leave your ally; let us devour him wrongfully,

and put aside the hardship Bujayla has brought.”

I bear liability for the slain of al-‘Is, the ‘Is of Shawahit,

and in that affair my pot will not be set on hearthstones for you.

And the slain in whom Nashib's horsemen embedded

at Aznam the points of brown Rudayni spears.

So, our two brothers, of our father and our mother,

away with you, away with you! There is no way to Jasr.
