أَعاذِلَO reproachful woman إِنَّindeed المالَwealth أَعلَمُI know أَنَّهُthat it
أَعاذِلَ إِنَّ المالَ أَعلَمُ أَنَّهُ
وَجامِعَهُand its gatherer لِلغائِلاتِfor calamities الغَوائِلِruinous
وَجامِعَهُ لِلغائِلاتِ الغَوائِلِ
O reproacher, I know indeed that wealth
I blame not wealth, though I know full well
And its gatherer are prey to ruinous calamities.
That it gathers to itself the misfortunes of fate;
مَتىwhen تَجعَلينيyou place me فَوقَupon نَعشِكِyour bier تَعلَميyou will know
مَتى تَجعَليني فَوقَ نَعشِكِ تَعلَمي
أَيُغنيcan it avail? مَكانيin my place أَبكُريmy young male camels وَأَفائِليand my weaned camel calves
أَيُغني مَكاني أَبكُري وَأَفائِلي
When you lay me upon your bier, you will know
When will you let me stand above your bier and know
Whether my young camels and my weanlings can take my place.
Whether my presence or my property avail?
وَماand ... is not المَرءُa person إِلّاexcept هامَةٌa death-owl أَوor بَلِيَّةٌa camel left to die at a grave

And man is but a death-owl or a camel left to die at his grave;
Man is but a passion or an affliction
A summoner buffets it, never heedless of him.
Clapped at by one who for another's mishap is blind.
