لاno شكَّdoubt لاقٍgoing to encounter شقاءَmisery
You thought that, in separation, I
You thought that in estrangement, I
would surely meet with misery.
Undoubtedly suffer adversity.
نعمyes لقيتُI encountered ولكنand yet

Yes, I met it, but
Yes, I have suffered, but
I clothed it in pride.
I have worn pride.

لاnot أُشمتَI cause to gloat الأَعداءَthe enemies
Indeed, I shall endure, so that
I will be patient until
I give the enemies no cause to gloat.
I do not grieve the enemies.

لاno شكَّdoubt باقٍremaining رقيقاa slave
You thought that, in separation, I
You thought that in estrangement, I
would surely remain a slave.
Undoubtedly, remain frail.
نعمyes بقيتُI remained ولكنand yet
فككتI undid قيداًa fetter وثيقاtightly fastened
Yes, I remained so, but
Yes, I have remained, but
I undid a tightly fastened fetter.
I have unshackled a tight bond.
قدindeed كنتI was حرّاًfree أسيراًcaptive
فصرتُso I became عبداًa slave طليقاunbound
I had been free, yet captive;
I used to be a prisoner free,
so I became a slave, yet unbound.
So I became an emancipated slave.

لاno شكdoubt فاقدُbereft of لبيmy wits

You thought that, in separation, I
You thought that in estrangement, I
would surely lose my wits.
Undoubtedly lose myself.

Yes, I lost them, but
Yes, I have lost, but
I found my reason and my Lord.
I have found my mind and my Lord.

I owned nothing but
I did not own except
my heart—and my heart did not die.
My heart, and my heart did not die.
