Salma demands of me that I love her.

When has the heart ever had a choice in love?

I would give my life for you, Salma; your beauty is enchanting,

but my heart will not return to be enchanted.

    I yielded often to passion, then found respite from it;

for I gained nothing but greater misery.

My humiliation in love would not let me return

to it and live oppressed and subjugated.

And the one I love delights all the more

because I cannot endure being apart from him.

And my infatuation with him and my anguish please him,

while my hopes, my misery, and all that happened come to nothing.

And though I see none but him in everything I see,

he is far beyond my hopes, so that I lament and lie awake.

So he bequeathed me a sickness lurking in my heart,

incurable—I saw medicine itself baffled by it.

Such was love for me; and if I should be

deserving of my illness, I would deserve recovery still more.

I have grown old, though my hair is coal-black and my youth

is like fragrant perfume wafting through the garden.

And my soul's powers have aged, though my soul is young,

and my heart is a child that has lived long in pain.

And this age surrendered me to her who

shows me the light of dawn as a murky night.

    I withdrew until nowhere farther away remained on earth;

for that reason, I heard no one speak of love.

And I wrestled with this life until I left her

and it behind, yet sorrowful and regretful.

I wept for them both until my tears seemed

a pool's outflow, its water cascading down.

And after that I wiped away my tears, silent,

bewildered, while the blaze in my heart flared up.

My heart has indeed become—as sorrow knows—

so changed that it will never change again.
