عدمتُ وفائي إن كتمتُ صنيعةً

عدمتُ وفائي إن كتمتُ صنيعةً

لكفيكَ عندي كيف تخفى وتكتمُ

لكفيكَ عندي كيف تخفى وتكتمُ

May I lose my loyalty if I conceal a kindness

I would be untrue if I concealed a favor

That your two hands have shown me—how could it be hidden and concealed?

From your hands - how could it be hidden or concealed?

وهبتَ محيطاً جامع اللفظ معجماً

وهبتَ محيطاً جامع اللفظ معجماً

وأنت محيطٌ جامعٌ متكلمُ

وأنت محيطٌ جامعٌ متكلمُ

You gave me a Muḥīṭ, a lexicon gathering words,

You granted an ocean, a comprehensive lexicon,

And you yourself are an all-embracing ocean that speaks.

While you are a comprehensive, speaking ocean.

كتابٌ حفيلٌ بالفوائد والحجى

كتابٌ حفيلٌ بالفوائد والحجى

به لغةُ الأعراب تزكو وتفخمُ

به لغةُ الأعراب تزكو وتفخمُ

A book rich in benefits and wisdom,

A worthy book, filled with benefits and wisdom,

Through it the Bedouins’ language flourishes and gains grandeur.

Through it the language of the Bedouins is purified and honored.

فكان نفيساً مرتين وقد أتى

فكان نفيساً مرتين وقد أتى

يكرِّمَهُ منك العطاءُ فيكرمُ

يكرِّمَهُ منك العطاءُ فيكرمُ

So it was precious twice over, and indeed there came

Thus it became precious twice over, and has come

Your generosity to honor it, and so it gained honor.

To be honored by your gift, so it is honored.

وهذبَ ألفاظي لمدحك أنها

وهذبَ ألفاظي لمدحك أنها

لآلئُ شكرٍ في ثناك تنظَّمُ

لآلئُ شكرٍ في ثناك تنظَّمُ

And it polished my words to praise you, for they are

It refined my words for praising you, so that they

وما هو عندي اليوم إلا فريدةٌ

أتت من فريدٍ فهي ذخر ومغنمُ

And to me today it is nothing but a peerless pearl,

What I have today is nothing but a masterpiece

That came from Farīd, the peerless one; thus it is a treasure and a prize.
