وأهوىand I adore الظلامَthe darkness وأهوىand I adore الضياءَthe light
I love the forenoon and I love the evening;
I love the dawn and I love the evening
And I adore the darkness and adore the light;
And I adore the darkness and I adore the light

يُنازعنيcontends with me منfrom بقائيmy existence البقاءَcontinuance
And a time in which my soul flutters,
And there is a time when my soul flutters
That wrestles with me for the continuance of my existence.
Life and death vie for my existence
معانيmeanings الحياةlife كأوقاتهاlike its times
فماso whatever سُرwas gladdened سَرgladdened وماand whatever سيءَwas saddened ساءَsaddened
Life's meanings are like its hours:
The meanings of life are like its times
So what is gladdened gladdens, and what is saddened saddens.
So what was bad went badly and what was good went well
إذاwhen الشمسُthe sun أرسلتsent forth النورthe light لاحتappeared
كنبعlike a spring عقيقٍcarnelian تَدفَّقَgushed ماءَwater
When the sun sends forth light, it appears
When the sun sends out its light
Like a spring of carnelian gushing water,
Like a spring of ruby pouring out water
وسالَand flowed كتبرٍlike raw gold أُذيبَwas melted وصُبَّand was poured
علىupon الكونِthe universe يسقيwaters الفضاspace والهواءَand the air
And flows like raw gold melted and poured
And it flows like melted amber
Upon the universe, watering space and air.
Watering the universe, the sky and the air
تَرقرَقَshimmered مثلlike دموعِtears العذاريthe maidens
حسبتَyou thought الخدودthe cheeks لهنfor them إناءَa vessel
It shimmers like the tears of maidens;
It glitters like the tears of maidens
You would think their cheeks a vessel.
As if their cheeks were cups
وماand not البردُthe cold فيin الليلِthe night إلاexcept لجينٌsilver
يذوبmelts سنىradiance وينيرand illuminates السناءَthe splendor
And the cold of night is nothing but silver,
And the cold of night is but a damsel
It melts into radiance and illumines the splendor.
Who melts in yearning and illuminates the radiance
كانhad الحسانthe beautiful women لبسنthey wore الحدادَmourning dress
وأسفرنَand they unveiled عنfrom كلevery وجهٍface أضاءَshone
The beautiful women had donned mourning clothes,
Beauty donned mourning
And unveiled every face that shone.
And revealed every glowing face
وإنand if خيَّمsettled الليلُthe night قامrose السوادُthe blackness
بهيماًpitch-black كعقلٍlike a mind أضاعَlost الذكاءَintelligence
And if night settles, blackness rises,
And if night falls, darkness arises
Pitch-black, like a mind that has lost intelligence.
Raging like a mind which lost its wits
كأنas though الغوانيthe beautiful women نشرنthey spread out الشعورَthe hair
وستَّرنَand they veiled أوجُهَهُنَّtheir faces حياءَout of modesty
As though the beauties had spread out their hair,
As if the melodies displayed their hair
And veiled their faces out of modesty.
And veiled their faces in shyness
فشمسُso the sun الصباحthe morning عقيقٌcarnelian يسيلflows
ونحنُand we دعوناwe named العقيقَthe carnelian ذكاءَDhukāʾ (the sun's name)
So the morning sun is flowing carnelian,
So the sun of morn is spilling ruby
And we have named the carnelian Dhukāʾ.
While we called the ruby wit
وبدرُand the full moon الظلامthe darkness لجينٌsilver لذاكfor that reason
يلألئُsparkles نورlight اللجينِthe silver صفاءَpurity
And the full moon of darkness is silver; hence
And the moon of darkness is that damsel
The silver's light sparkles with purity.
The sheen of the damsel shines with purity
وليسand is not الدجُنَّةُthe darkness إلّاexcept فَناءٌannihilation
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle تراءَتit appeared لناto us يتراءىappears
And darkness is nothing but annihilation,
For darkness is but annihilation
Which appears whenever darkness appears to us.
When she and us are displayed to each other
وماand not قولُناour saying الشمسthe sun وَالبدرَand the full moon والصبحَand the dawn
والليلand the night فيin العمرlife إلاexcept امتراءَdisputation
And our saying “sun,” “full moon,” and “dawn,”
And our talk of sun and moon and dawn
And “night” in life is nothing but disputation.
And night in life are but pretense
وإنand indeed الحياةlife لَتُقضىis indeed spent كذاthus
طوراًat times ظلاماًdarkness وطوراًand at times ضياءَlight
And life is indeed spent thus:
For life is thus spent
At times darkness, at times light.
A time in darkness and a time in light
وماand not اختَلَفَتdiffered غيرُother than عينٍan eye تراهاsees it
شقاءًas misery وعينٍand an eye تراهاsees it هناءَas bliss
And nothing differs but an eye that sees it
Only the beholder’s eye differs
As misery, and an eye that sees it as bliss.
One sees misery, one sees bliss
وماand not النورُthe light إلّاexcept الحياةُlife فهذاso this one
رآهُsaw it صباحاًas morning وذاكand that one مساءَas evening
And light is nothing but life; so this one
For light is but life, so one
Saw it as morning, and that one as evening.
Saw it as morn, and one as evening
