I found time's blow upon us grievous

When we were struck by your abandonment.

    ميعادُ لقينا إلى الحشر

    So you departed from us, not out of hatred;

Our appointed reunion is deferred until the Resurrection.

How did you depart, when you had dwelt

Within us as the soul dwells in the breast?

Do you forsake the light, though rejoicing

In it, for the darkness and the grave?

The days betrayed you, faithful as you were,

And time is by nature given to treachery.

Fever descended upon you, so you melted beneath it,

Just as raw gold melts in the embers.

Had it known, then it would have become

    Coolness upon you—had it known.

How did it burn so fiercely within you, stealing

From us all your radiant qualities?

Your youth did not fend off the fever, nor did

Medicine that had reached the utmost bounds of thought.

And medicine is one of life's devices; for if

Fate is decreed, it puts an end to the matter.

What did you gain from life, when you did not

Come away with anything but sickness and suffering?

Too scant for you are the flowing tears,

Even if our souls were to flow in their stead.

    فاليوم قد طويت بلا نشر

    You were the sky and all its splendor;

So today you are folded away, with no unfolding.

O garden, the scorching wind swept through you,

And turned you into a barren waste.

The garden's branches bent in anguish

At the horror of your verdant branch's fall.

And the gardens' flowers withered at

The fading breaths of the blossoms.

    أنت الشبابُ مضى بلا وزر

    You are life that ended without hope;

You are youth that passed away without sin.

Who was more joyful than you, brimming

In our midst with warmth and cheer?

Who was wiser than you, looking

With a sage's gaze upon the mystery of life?

Who was more radiant than you as you rose?

Your radiance puts dawn's rising to shame.

Who was kinder than you, sincere

Of heart, with purity ingrained in you?

Who was purer than you, smiling

At life, in private and in public?

The anguish over you has indeed grown immense,

For it came as a wrong without excuse.

We do not want patience in your absence, nor

Would we ever hope for reward from it.

God help us, now that you have gone and have not

    Left us anything but remembrance.
