I am amid illnesses and sorrows.

My youthful ardor has gone, and my life is lost.

How often I called upon death with a cry of despair,

Knowing that my rest lies in my death.

    شاكياً ليس من يجيب شكاتي

    Weeping, with no one to wipe away my tears;

Lamenting, with no one to answer my complaint.

My throbbing heart grew frail until it vanished,

And flowed, melted, with the tears.

And my frail soul perished, hurled

    Into wailing and sighs.

So pity a soul that has perished, and a heart

    Desolate within desolate ribs.

In the night I am like a strange secret

In a heart devoid of affections.

I alone am wakeful, restless among

    Sleepers with tranquil souls.

Like one laid low in the depths of a spacious grave,

    Whom decayed remains have surrounded.

    Darkness—and no ray of hope

To bring comfort in the blackest depths of darkness.

    قمتَ تدني إليَّ يومً وفاتي

    O night, you are the mirror of my fortune;

You set about drawing the day of my death nearer to me.

How welcome is death, O darkness, for I am

Wretched in fortune—enough! I have grown weary of my life.
