He spends most of his time in taverns,
You grieve for a youth that was light, now extinguished,
At gaming tables, at dusk and at dawn.
And lament a heart that was embers, now quenched.

He pays with his health between cup and bowl,
You reckon what has passed of the days with him
And loses money at gambling, squandering it.
And return, remembering, to examine it.

If Salma offers him sincere counsel, he rebuffs her,
Except you protected your feelings as
Oppressive toward her, forbidding and rebellious.
Saplings are protected, nurtured.

How often did the memory of Sulayman disturb her heart,
And relates the taverns' atrocities, declaiming them.
Keeping the long night awake, sleepless!

He speaks roughly in telling his tales; if she complains,
When she lay down to rest, she saw a specter
The least he does is scold her with threats.
Beside her, keeping her company in slumber.

Obstinate, excessive in malice, and overstepping bounds.
Before her eyes, materialized, embodied.

Other times, delighted, charming, fortunate.

Through drinking at humiliation's watering place.
Places, wandering to and fro, appeased.

For the one they drove away from her, a fettered captive.
Vanquishing her fading powers, extinguished.

When memory persists, it were a blazing flame.
Her eyes on the horizon, awaiting the departed.

Though she escaped and denied the hunter his prey,
Like a palace shaken by gusts, demolished.

Horrified as if bitten by an adder.
