A letter from you reached me early today,

    bearing sweet words and reproach.

Conciliatory, yet it came upon me suddenly,

like a meteor plunging through the folds of darkness.

Love's revelation descended between its lines,

and fragrance and perfume drenched its margins.

Yet you were the one who turned away without cause,

and before whom a veil arose in love.

You left my heart bereft of reason, bewildered,

fearing its own misfortunes, filled with dread.

How, then, did you write today, forgetting? And can

a letter restore what you stole from me?

You stole the intelligence that was my resource in life,

and the resolve with which life's wilderness is crossed.

And you left nothing I could say I had kept

to aid my heart should calamity befall it.

So despair's blackness thwarted my resolve,

as fog stands in the way of light.

    وطاولت في هجري وقلتِ ثواب

    You went to extremes in cutting me off, calling it kindness;

you prolonged your desertion, calling it a reward.

Such is love's reward with you:

punishment befalls whoever seeks your love.

    ولا عمرَ إلّا أن يكونَ شباب

    I wasted my youth on you, and so my life is wasted;

and life is no life unless it is youth.

    Yours is the judgment, but whatever it is, be gentle;

and there is no sin that cannot be repented of.

And there is no night but dawn rises after it,

and sometimes in summer clouds pour down rain.

And now you have asked my heart to return,

though seeking you had already exhausted me.

I shall hasten, urged on by love of you, which has

    spacious dwellings between my ribs.

So I shall erase the past and not mention it; no

words shall revive it in your ears.

And I hope this is our last estrangement; let no

    delusion or falsehood divide us,

nor gossip and hearsay, which squander

the sweetness of our two lives while we are angry.

So be my beloved, as passion has willed,

and you are my life: there is no leaving you.

By God, these lines are not my reply

to you; rather, I myself am the reply to you.
