Your reproach cannot reconcile us, for we

have severed ties, with no hope of return.

And you were all patience in my absence,

without regret or any public mention.

Events have indeed struck me down, yet

I saw you heedless of the plain truth.

And your heart grew more inaccessible than an eagle,

so my heart became like an impregnable fortress.

Did I lose you? No—you lost me, for

I was the first to come forward in humble entreaty.

Yet I grieved for you when

I experienced the reality of dreadful estrangement.

And you persisted in your error, unheeding,

    thinking me fit for submission.

I would have yielded, had you shown anything

that could be called an overture of kindness.

Your pride would accept nothing but my abasement,

and I am self-sufficient, not fashioned to kneel.

And where you were concerned, I deemed myself a match

for you, lady of exalted standing.

This is no boast, for to me you were

what the heart is to the ribs.

I loved you with the fullness of my bygone dreams,

and the fullness of my swiftly fading youth.

So youth filled me with regret as it departed,

as the blossoms of spring withered.

And it left a choking grief that persisted in estrangement,

pressing hard upon my spacious breast.

So the nights extinguished my feelings

and my dreams, as candles are snuffed out,

and suckled my heart on sorrow and despair,

so it became less than a suckling child.

It grew used to sleeping with no hope

of meeting you in its recurring morrow.

It goes about its life unheeding, and walks

through the days in terrifying silence.

    وأبكيه فيضحك كالخليع

    I jest with it for no reason, and it weeps;

and I make it weep, and it laughs like a libertine.

It sees the world and hears, yet appears

    distracted, neither seeing nor hearing.

It shies from people like a stubborn steed,

and grows as calm as a gentle lamb.

So misery clung to it, without complaint,

as closely as one bedfellow clings to another.

No, Hind, this is no life,

nor compensation for a squandered lifetime.

And I have defied justice, which incites me

against you; many a rebel is like one who obeys.

Shall I pursue vengeance on you that would blight

your life through time, with none to intercede?

    But no—despite your estrangement, you

are honored, in spite of everyone.

Forgiveness! Go, and may you be granted happiness,

like sunlight blazing upon the rooftops.
