You adorned your chest with amber, wearing

a necklace that hung down to your breasts and was fastened.

Gazes have made its beads jealous as they reach

toward you; hence the beads are forever yellow.

It does not harm them that they are dusky and pale,

and their worth is plain to the eye of anyone who appraises.

And many an ugly face has had a bearer

bright as meteors, while a lovely face conceals envy.

How happy the necklace, at ease, when it is toyed with

by your hands upon a bosom where it has found bliss!

You walk, head bowed awhile, and set it trembling,

    showing aloofness as you go.

    فإن وقفت تراءى هادئاً كمدا

    So it never stops throbbing, rapturous with longing;

but if you stop, it appears still with grief.

It has a healer's gentleness as it touches

your breasts, modest and unhurried in its touch.

Your breasts are two marvels of art, two wonders

of beauty, and two treasures of life, created for love.

And two verses of light, sent down

upon you—light has solidified upon your chest.

Upon them the necklace is like a star dimmed

by an orb that stretches night toward it as it recedes.

So it kept flashing, though pale, and went on,

asking the distance to bring its light nearer.

A symbol of the hearts whose owners loved

your eyes, then went on, knowing no guidance.

They have clung to you, never coming loose; they are, as

you see, in love with the sway of your figure.

Examine that wondrous necklace; you will see

my heart, this necklace's unique jewel, all alone.

    It loved you with pure love, with nothing mingled in it;

but your coldness left it no endurance.

So it died while living, insensible to anything

that might hurt or delight it, whether absent or present.

Yet it keeps a pledge and remembers

affection, and every day courts death.

    And comes to a watering-place brimming with despair;

and despair in life wears down the soul and body.

Still, like this necklace, it remains restless,

and its love, like this necklace, has been knotted fast.
