Your delicate fingertips, once they were drawn

Across the plectrum, made lifeless matter speak.

So it let us hear love's bewilderment and youthful dalliance,

And sang to us of love and affection,

    إذا نحن استزدنا منه زادا

    And enraptured us with every mellow cadence;

Whenever we asked it for more, it gave more.

So it stirred my hidden passion within my heart,

And made my ribs burn more fiercely with it.

As though your hands were toying with my breast,

Stirring emotions and the heart within it.

Your hands were touching my eyes,

And binding sleeplessness into their folded lids.

As though your hands were playing with my soul,

Kneading it, now grown pliant to the rein.

So it sings to you of life, though it has lost

In it the hope that had worn desire out.

And weeps to you for wishes, a bereaved mother wailing

Over them when they came to their end.

And mourns the mind, radiant and proud,

Stricken, neither gaining nor giving benefit.

And laments each smiling thing that has departed,

Having donned black in mourning for the light.

Were it not for helplessness, I would have split my heart open

The morning it carried its despair of life too far,

And thus have seen the truth—but

Time scatters ashes in my eyes.

May I be your ransom! Let us hear every melody

That turns our despair into newfound hope.

And let the ivory sing that, within it,

The meanings of life are extended.

    وأكثر ما يُرى النورُ اعتقادا

    So we believe love to be light revealed;

And light is most often seen as belief,

    For love, itself dark, sends

Pain and corruption into the heart.
