أَكرمhow noble بهنَّthey are أواتياًcoming وذاوهباand going
أَكرم بهنَّ أواتياً وذاوهبا
مثلlike الشموسthe suns طولعاًrising وغوارباand setting
مثل الشموس طولعاً وغواربا
How noble they are, coming and going,
Honor them, the ever-giving as they rise and set
Like suns rising and setting.
Like suns, dawning and darkening
خضنthey braved البحارthe seas وجُبِّنَand crossed أجوازَthe inner reaches الفلاof the desert
خضن البحار وجُبِّنَ أجوازَ الفلا
وذرعنهنَّand traversed them مشارقاًeastward ومغارباand westward
وذرعنهنَّ مشارقاً ومغاربا
They braved the seas and crossed the desert's vast reaches,
They plowed the seas and crossed the tumultuous waves
And traversed them eastward and westward.
And cultivated horizons from east to west
وخففنand hastened يسعفنَaiding الجريحَthe wounded أواسياًas healers
وخففن يسعفنَ الجريحَ أواسياً
وركضنand hurried يخدمنَserving المريضَthe sick دوائباtirelessly
وركضن يخدمنَ المريضَ دوائبا
And hastened to aid the wounded as healers,
They gently tended to the wounded with remedy
And hurried to serve the sick, tirelessly.
And dutifully cared for the ailing patient
هنَّthey الملائكُthe angels مرسلاتٌsent منfrom علٍon high
هنَّ الملائكُ مرسلاتٌ من علٍ
للناسto humankind منfrom لدنthe presence of الإلهGod كواعباfull-bosomed maidens
للناس من لدن الإله كواعبا
They are angels sent from on high,
They are angels sent from the Most High
To humankind from God, as full-bosomed maidens.
As graceful maidens from God to mankind
الغالياتُthe precious ones جواهراًas jewels والساطعاand the radiant ones
الغالياتُ جواهراً والساطعا
تُfeminine plural ending أزاهراًas blossoms والسفراتand the bright-faced ones كواكباas stars
تُ أزاهراً والسفرات كواكبا
Precious as jewels, and radiant
The precious gems and the radiant
As blossoms, and bright-faced as stars.
Flowers and the veiled celestial bodies
هذيthese العذاريvirgins الحاملاتُbearing أشعةًrays
هذي العذاري الحاملاتُ أشعةً
تجلوclearing away عنfrom القلبِthe heart الحزينِsorrowful غياهباdarkness
تجلو عن القلبِ الحزينِ غياهبا
These virgins, bearing rays
These chaste maidens carrying rays
That clear the darkness from the grieving heart,
Dispelling gloom from the grieving heart
جئنَthey came to الصليبَthe cross كماjust as أَتتهcame to it نسوةٌwomen
جئنَ الصليبَ كما أَتته نسوةٌ
يومَon the day of الصليبِthe crucifixion بواكياًweeping ونوادباand lamenting
يومَ الصليبِ بواكياً ونوادبا
Came to the cross, as women came to it
They came to the cross as women had
On the day of crucifixion, weeping and lamenting.
On the day of the cross, weeping and grieving
وعليهand upon it عيسىJesus قدhad أَمالِbowed جبينهhis brow
وعليه عيسى قد أَمالِ جبينه
وجرىand flowed الدمُthe blood الفاديredeeming عليهover him خاضباstaining
وجرى الدمُ الفادي عليه خاضبا
And upon it Jesus had bowed his brow,
And on it was Jesus, resting his forehead
And redeeming blood flowed over him, staining him.
As the redeeming blood streamed down the cross
ووقفنَand they stood يبصرنَbeholding المسيحَChrist مكللاًcrowned
ووقفنَ يبصرنَ المسيحَ مكللاً
بالشوكwith thorns مستفعاًdarkened هزيلاًgaunt شاحباpale
بالشوك مستفعاً هزيلاً شاحبا
And they stood beholding Christ, crowned
And they stood watching the Christ crowned
With thorns, darkened, gaunt and pale.
With thorns, frail and pale
فأَذبنَso they melted حباتِthe innermost cores القلوبِof hearts تفجعاًin anguish
فأَذبنَ حباتِ القلوبِ تفجعاً
وسكبنَand they poured out منfrom دررpearls الشؤونthe tear ducts سحائباclouds
وسكبنَ من درر الشؤون سحائبا
So in anguish they melted their hearts' very cores,
Their hearts melted in agony
And poured out clouds of pearls from their tear ducts.
And their souls wept showers of pearly sorrows
أمّاbut وقدand now نبذَhave cast aside الشعوبُthe peoples شريعةًa religious law
أمّا وقد نبذَ الشعوبُ شريعةً
سكبَpoured forth المسيحُChrist بهاthrough it الشعاعthe ray الثاقباpiercing
سكبَ المسيحُ بها الشعاع الثاقبا
But now that the peoples have cast aside a law
Now that nations have abandoned the law
Through which Christ poured forth piercing light,
That Christ shone with piercing brilliance
بالبرto righteousness والحسناتِand good deeds تأمرit commands أهلهاits followers
بالبر والحسناتِ تأمر أهلها
والنَهيِand prohibition عنagainst عَمَلِthe work of السيوفِswords قواضباcleaving
والنَهيِ عن عَمَلِ السيوفِ قواضبا
Enjoining righteousness and good deeds on its followers,
Commanding its people with righteousness and good deeds
And forbidding the work of cleaving swords,
And forbidding the drawing of vengeful swords
فكأنماso it is as though همthey صالبوهare his crucifiers مرةًonce
فكأنما هم صالبوه مرةً
أخرىagain ومصليand the kindler of الحربwar يصبحbecomes صالباa crucifier
أخرى ومصلي الحرب يصبح صالبا
It is as though they crucify him once
It is as if they crucified him again
Again; whoever kindles war becomes a crucifier.
And the herald of war becomes the crucifier
فلذاكso for that reason هنَّthey الناهجاتُthe women following سبيلَهhis path
فلذاك هنَّ الناهجاتُ سبيلَه
أماis it not? حمدنthey were praised فواتحاًbeginnings وعواقباand outcomes
أما حمدن فواتحاً وعواقبا
Thus they, the women who follow his path—
Thus they are the ones lamenting his path
Have they not been praised, from first to last?—
While praising the beginnings and the ends
أخواتهhis sisters وذواتُand women of قرباهhis kinship بماaccording to what
أخواته وذواتُ قرباه بما
أوصىhe enjoined البريةَhumankind موحياًinspiring ومخاطباand addressing
أوصى البريةَ موحياً ومخاطبا
Are his sisters and his kin, according to what
His sisters and kin, as the prophecy
He enjoined upon humankind, inspiring and addressing them.
Instructed the wilderness, revealing and addressing
الوارثاتُthe female heirs حنانthe tenderness of مريمَMary رحمةًin mercy
الوارثاتُ حنان مريمَ رحمةً
بالعالمينtoward all humankind أباعداًstrangers وأقارباand relatives
بالعالمين أباعداً وأقاربا
Heirs to Mary's tenderness, showing mercy
The inheritors of Virgin Mary's affection
To all humankind, strangers and kin,
Near and far, for all worlds
منfrom كلevery عاليةhigh in الجنابِstanding رفيعةٍexalted
من كل عالية الجنابِ رفيعةٍ
تندىdrip يداهاher two hands أنعماًblessings ومواهباand gifts
تندى يداها أنعماً ومواهبا
From every woman of noble standing and lofty rank,
Of high and noble descent, outstretched hands
Whose hands drip blessings and gifts,
Bestowing blessings and grants
ووضيعةٍand a lowly woman نزلcame down الزمانُtime بهاupon her فلمand did not
ووضيعةٍ نزل الزمانُ بها فلم
يتركleave لهاfor her إلاexcept الحياةَlife متاعباas hardships
يترك لها إلا الحياةَ متاعبا
To every lowly woman whom time has brought down, leaving
And lowly ones, whom time has tested
Her nothing but a life of hardship.
Leaving them only a life of troubles
وقَفَتshe devoted علىto حبِlove of القريبone's neighbor حياتهاher life
وقَفَت على حبِ القريب حياتها
وسرتand she walked علىalong السننِthe path القويمupright مذاهباin her ways
وسرت على السننِ القويم مذاهبا
She has devoted her life to loving her neighbor,
They devoted their lives to loving the kinsman
And followed the straight path in all her ways.
And followed the straight exemplary traditions
فهيfor she التيthe one whose ضمنَguaranteed الإلهُGod جزاءَهاher reward
فهي التي ضمنَ الإلهُ جزاءَها
واللَهand God عدلٌjust جازياًrewarding ومعاقباand punishing
واللَه عدلٌ جازياً ومعاقبا
For she is the one whose reward God has guaranteed,
For God, the Just Judge rewarding and punishing
And God is just in rewarding and punishing.
Has guaranteed their reward
بوركنَmay they be blessed أعمالاًin deeds فهنَّfor they صواحبٌcompanions
بوركنَ أعمالاً فهنَّ صواحبٌ
لمنto whomever استخارتهhave chosen him النوائبُmisfortunes صاحباas a companion
لمن استخارته النوائبُ صاحبا
Blessed be they in their deeds, for they are companions
Blessed are their deeds, for they are the companions
To anyone whom misfortunes have chosen as a companion.
Of those tried by tribulations, and their bosom friends
