Your eyes taught me poetry and love verse,

and your two glances wove my shrouds from what they spun.

You turned away from me, and I had nothing but a sigh

with which to fend off sorrow, misery, and ailments.

God, oh God, those eyes of yours! Their light

has become the heart's preoccupation, diverting it from its cares.

Indeed, they called me a lover for loving you; but can

a heart slain by love be called a lover?

I was nothing but a martyr to those two eyes, and never

have I known in love anyone who calls the eyes to witness.

In your eyes I see the light of dawn breaking forth,

and love arising, and life still young.

And in my heart is misery's night, letting fall

its darkness into a soul where sorrow has settled.

I have become one whom morning finds alone,

until the darkness of night finds me secluded.

So I adore the dawn, rosy in its smiles,

and I adore the flowers it brings, fresh and dewy.

And I adore the sun, with a banner raised for her,

as though it were spreading canopies over all creation.

And the full moon's radiance keeps me company, and I find

solace in the star, whether it shines or sets.

I listen to the water running through its courses

over the pebbles, a passionate lover winning kisses.

The waves indeed enrapture me, singing

a melody that drives the heart of stone into a frenzy.

And the birds, drinking the light of the sky—when

it flows as life through them, they fly rejoicing in it.

    And the horizon has stretched out kindness's hand in blessing;

night does not veil its even-toothed smile.

The joys of the universe surround me in abundance,

making my heart celebrate them in silence.

And silence is the most eloquent thing existence dictates to

a heart stirred by the universe's mystery.

    تغدو به روحه مملوءةً أملا

    Hope confides to it what wishes conceal;

through it, its spirit becomes filled with hope.

Your eyes and the universe—beauty has sworn that

my heart shall be seen absorbed in both throughout life.

And whenever I try to bring reflection to bear on

beauty's secret, I find reason held captive.

And beauty is only the light of love reflected

upon the beloved, who thus appears in perfect beauty.

And love gains strength through it, and the two

throughout life have never differed for a day, nor parted.

Your eyes hold the smiling horizon,

and here is my heart: it has carried the light of love.

They both pressed upon my soul, and it secured nothing

for itself but embers blazing in my breast.

Oh, those two eyes of yours! Indeed, through them I drink

the wine of passion, while my heart is drunk with love.

Within me, from loving you both, a despair persists, and has

turned my life's garden, through sorrow, into ruins.
