نعمyes ماتdied فيin صدريmy breast حديثُthe talk رجائهof its hope
وأسلمنيand gave me over قلبيmy heart إلىto بُرَحائهits torment
Yes, the talk of its hope has died within my breast,
And my heart has given me over to its torment.
فإنso if كنتِyou had أزمعتِyou resolved القطيعَةَthe severance فاِفعليthen do it
وإنand if تُزمعيyou resolve فعلٌan act برغمِdespite خفائهits concealment
So if you have resolved to sever our bond, then do it,
And if you resolve upon it, that is an act, despite its concealment.
لقدindeed كنتِyou were فيin صحراءِthe desert عمريof my life روضةًa garden
فأذبلthen withered فيهاin it الزهرَthe blossoms حَرُّthe heat ظمائهof its thirst
Indeed, you were a garden in the desert of my life,
Then the heat of its thirst withered the blossoms there.
وماand not حبُّناour love إلاexcept كنابتةٍlike a plant ذوتwithered
ولمand did not يُروِهاwater it جفنُthe eyelid الضحىmidmorning بضيائهwith its radiance
And our love is but like a plant that withered,
Nor did midmorning's eyelid water it with its radiance.
لعلكperhaps you فيin القطعِthe severance القريبimminent مزيلةًremoving
عنfrom القلبthe heart عبئاًa burden كانwas أصلthe root شقائهof its misery
Perhaps, in the impending break, you will lift
From the heart a burden that was the root of its misery.
فكمfor how many مرضعٍa suckling infant قدindeed ماتdied لمnot يُدرَwas known داؤُهhis illness
ولوand had عاشlived كانwould have been العمرُlife اكبرthe greatest دائهhis illness
For how many a suckling infant has died, his illness unknown,
And had he lived, life would have been his greatest illness.
أديريturn بهذاthrough this الكونthe universe طرفكyour gaze سائلاquestioning
ورُدّيهand bring it back يرجِعit will return دافقاًstreaming ببكائهwith its weeping
Sweep your questioning gaze across this universe,
And bring it back; it will return streaming with its tears.
فأهونُfor the easiest ماwhat فيin الكونthe universe قطعُsevering محبةٍa love
إذاwhen وُجدتit is found فيهin it كساريlike the flowing هوائهof its air
For the easiest thing in the universe is to sever a love,
When it is found there like its flowing air.
وأعظمand the greatest ذنبيmy sin إنindeed قلبيmy heart فيin الهوىlove
مشاعرهits feelings مقرونةٌare bound بوفائهto its fidelity
And my greatest sin is that my heart, in love,
Has its feelings bound to its fidelity.
وإنيand indeed I غريبٌa stranger بينamong أهليmy family ومعشريand my people
اجررI drag بينamong الناسthe people أقدامَthe feet تائهof a lost man
And indeed I am a stranger among my family and my people,
I drag a lost man's feet among the people.
لقدindeed ماتdied فيin قلبيmy heart الرجاءُhope فإنso if أعشI live
فطولُthen a long spell احتضارٍof dying كيفhow ليfor me بشفائهwith its healing
Hope has indeed died in my heart; so if I live on,
Then a long death-agony—how can I find a cure for it?
وقلبكand your heart مغمورٌimmersed بماءِin the water حياتهof its life
ووجهكand your face مغمورٌimmersed بماءِin the water حيائهof its modesty
And your heart is immersed in the water of its life,
And your face is immersed in the water of its modesty.
فدونكso take for yourself بينamong الناسthe people ماwhatever شئتِyou wish منof هوىًlove
لقدindeed ماتَdied فيin صدريmy breast حديثثthe talk (apparent typo) رجائهof its hope
So take, among the people, whatever love you wish;
Indeed, the talk of its hope has died within my breast.
