These sorrows I have woven into verse,

amid misgivings and sorrows.

وبذلتُ فيها من دمي

وبذلتُ فيها من دمي

الغالي ومن دمعي المصون

الغالي ومن دمعي المصون

And I spent on them some of my blood,

so precious, and some of my guarded tears.

الجاريات من الشؤون

Verses of sorrow, composed by

the unfolding course of affairs.

نزعات يأس كلهنَّ

نزعات يأس كلهنَّ

كأَنهنَّ من الجنون

كأَنهنَّ من الجنون

Impulses of despair, all of them,

as though they sprang from madness.

بدهات أفكار لما

بدهات أفكار لما

قد كان أو ما قد يكون

قد كان أو ما قد يكون

Sudden flashes of thought about what

has been, or what may be.

وإليكَ أهديها كما

وإليكَ أهديها كما

يشكو الخدينُ إلى الخدين

يشكو الخدينُ إلى الخدين

And to you I dedicate them, as

a close friend laments to a close friend.

أنت الصفيُّ كأنما

أنت الصفيُّ كأنما

قطَّرتَ ماءٍ معين

قطَّرتَ ماءٍ معين

You are the true friend, as though

you had distilled flowing water.

أنت العليم بما ينا

أنت العليم بما ينا

وبني به الداءُ الدفين

وبني به الداءُ الدفين

You know what is repeatedly inflicted

on me by the buried malady.

أنت الذي اختار الفؤا

أنت الذي اختار الفؤا

دُ لنفسه في العلمين

دُ لنفسه في العلمين

You are the one the heart chose

for itself in both worlds.

وأنا وإياك الظليلُ

وأنا وإياك الظليلُ

وظلمه في كل حين

وظلمه في كل حين

And I and you are the shade-giver

and its darkness, at every moment.

هذي الشجون بكل ما

هذي الشجون بكل ما

فيها من الدمع السخين

فيها من الدمع السخين

These sorrows, with all

the hot tears they contain—

فاحرص عليها أنها

فاحرص عليها أنها

قِطَعٌ من القلب الحزين

قِطَعٌ من القلب الحزين

so cherish them, for they are

pieces of the sorrowful heart.

واعذر أخاك وكن له

واعذر أخاك وكن له

في الناس خير أخٍ أمين

في الناس خير أخٍ أمين

And forgive your brother, and be to him

among people, the finest trustworthy brother.
