منfrom البؤسmisery وارحمand have mercy إنناindeed we بؤساءwretched
My God, come to our aid with Your kindness and heal us
My God, support us with Your kindness, and heal us
of misery, and have mercy: we are wretched.
From misery, and have mercy, we are miserable
ترىcould it be قبلbefore هذاthis الكونuniverse كنّاwe were بآخرٍin another
وكنتَand You were لناfor us رباًa Lord وكانand there was بقاءُeverlasting existence
Could it be that before this universe we were in another,
You see, before this universe we were in another
and You were our Lord, and there was everlasting life?
And You were for us a Lord, and continuance was
وهلand did فيهin it أَغضبناكwe angered You حتىso that نفيتناYou banished us
إلىto الأرضthe earth نشقىwe suffer فوقهاupon it ونُساءُand are ill-treated
And did we anger You there, so that You banished us
Did we anger You there, so You exiled us
to the earth, to suffer upon it and be ill-treated,
To the earth we suffer upon it and are humbled
وتنبُذناand You cast us away عنfrom ظهرهاits back فيinto قرارةٍa deep hollow
تحالَفَjoined forces موتٌdeath تحتهاbeneath it وفناءُand annihilation
and cast us from its back into a deep hollow,
And cast off its back into desolation
where death and annihilation have joined forces beneath it?
Where death conspired beneath it and perishing

فيلحقناso it follows us تحتbeneath الترابthe dust شقاءُmisery
Was our misery above the dust not enough for us,
Was not our misery above the soil enough
that misery should follow us beneath the dust?
That misery follows us beneath the soil
أَكفارةًis this atonement عماfor what اجترمناwe committed wrongs قبلهاbefore it
علىin الجهلignorance فاغفرthen forgive إنناindeed we جهلاءُignorant
Is this atonement for the wrongs we committed before it,
As atonement for what we sinned before it
in ignorance? Then forgive us: we are ignorant.
In ignorance, so forgive, we are ignorant

With a spirit You lodged within the body, it had

No home but there, the heavens

The body, whose origin is earth, torments it;
The body tortures it, its origin is dust
it bears a sickness in separation, and that too is a sickness.
Within the soul a disease, and that is disease

Night's quarry, already enclosed in a dark recess
Wandering the night that obscurity enveloped it
of the body, where agonizing pain scorches it.
From the body the horizons pray to it

And how can it find solace, bereft of its light?
And how can it find solace lacking its light
And what is the full moon but light?
For the moon cannot but give off light

And what are blossoms if they lose their fragrance, and what are dreams,
Nor the flower if it loses its fragrance, nor hope
when affliction spreads everywhere and hope dies?
If afflictions come and desire dies

And the soul's torment has grown because You are angry
And adding to the soul's torment, You find
with it for a sin brought about by fools,
It guilty of a crime the foolish caused

Time gave birth in us, and it is feeble
its powers; and we are its feeble children.
Its strength, and we are its weaklings

Our pains have dragged on in an abode of exile;
Pains persisted with us in an alien land
so grant us Your mercy, my Lord: we are strangers.
So have mercy my Lord, we are strangers
