As for the lover, he is just as you know:

Burning pangs grow, and ribs seethe.

Spring has gone, and nothing follows it

Except scorching blasts whose fire scorches.

Every sprout turns yellow because of them

In the earth, or in the heart and mind.

And passion wears the body away; and if

Passion grows, the soul is what it wears away.

Tell her: your eyes lay bare

My heart with the magic of love and kohl.

    القلب يشربها ويتسحلي

    Two cups, whose wine was death;

The heart drinks it and finds it sweet.

And life is long in torment; I will not

    Consent to perish slowly.

Increase my heartache; I shall grieve over you still more,

So that I may hasten my death in love.

How many have given of themselves, their souls lost

To them, without thanks for their giving!

And how many a love brings suffering and misery, since

In life it never alighted on one worthy of it!

    Nobility alone was its motive.

O Hind, there is no love without nobility.

The loftiest feelings—none understands them both

Among humankind except those endowed with virtue.

Then why does she cut me off, when no bond was ever formed

By Hind? There is no severance without union.

Ask about the meanings of pride, and do not

Reproach, for you will neither find solace nor give it.

And cast this closeness into depths

Of the breast, surging with ignorance.

And darken your youth, for it is a loan

That you will return one day without delay.
